0x9C

Epson Printer

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 0x9C is a critical hardware fault on Epson WorkForce and EcoTank printers. The printer's internal diagnostic system has detected a failure it cannot recover from automatically. This error most commonly points to a printhead failure or a problem with the main circuit board.

Affected Models

  • Epson WorkForce WF-3733
  • Epson WorkForce WF-4833
  • Epson EcoTank ET-4760
  • Epson EcoTank ET-3760
  • Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4820

Common Causes

  • The printhead has overheated or developed an internal electrical fault
  • Ink has leaked past the cartridges or printhead and reached the main board
  • A power interruption occurred during a print job, corrupting an internal process
  • The printer's main board has aged to the point of component failure
  • An incompatible or damaged ink cartridge is sending incorrect signals to the printer's control board

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the printer from the wall outlet. Do not just turn it off with the power button — fully disconnect the power cord. Wait at least 10 minutes.

Some 0x9C errors are triggered by temporary overheating or transient electrical faults. A full 10-minute cool-down and power discharge can clear them.

  2. While the printer is unplugged, open the top cover and inspect the inside of the printer for any signs of ink leaking onto the bottom of the carriage area or the main board (usually visible through the base of the cartridge area).

Ink contamination on the main board is a serious issue. If you see wet ink pooled near the electronics, the main board may already be damaged.

  3. Remove and reinsert each ink cartridge, making sure each one is fully seated and clicks into its slot. A cartridge that is not fully inserted can cause communication errors.

Even if the cartridges were fine before the error appeared, removing and reseating them resets the cartridge communication and rules out a loose connection as the cause.

  4. Reconnect the power and turn the printer on. Watch the startup sequence. If the printhead carriage moves normally and the error does not appear until you try to print, the issue may be with a specific ink cartridge.

If the error appears immediately at startup before any cartridges are detected, the main board is the most likely culprit.

  5. If the error persists, try replacing one ink cartridge at a time, starting with the cartridge in the slot that corresponds to the color showing errors in test prints. A defective cartridge chip can trigger this error.

Only try new genuine Epson cartridges for this test. Third-party cartridges with incompatible chips can cause false hardware errors.

When to Call a Professional

Error 0x9C requires professional diagnosis if the basic reset steps do not resolve it. Epson authorized service centers can run a diagnostic to determine whether the printhead or main board is the root cause. For EcoTank printers, repair is often more worthwhile due to their higher purchase price compared to budget inkjet models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a bad ink cartridge really cause a critical hardware error?

Yes — in some cases. Ink cartridges communicate with the printer via a small electronic chip. A cartridge with a faulty or incompatible chip can send incorrect signals that the printer interprets as a hardware fault. Trying a fresh genuine Epson cartridge is a quick and inexpensive step before assuming the printer's hardware is damaged.

My printer shows 0x9C after a power outage. Is it broken?

Not necessarily. A power interruption during a print job can leave the printer in a corrupt state. Try a full power cycle — unplug for 10 minutes and reconnect. If the error clears and the printer works normally, the outage was the cause and no repair is needed.

Is there a firmware update that fixes 0x9C?

In some cases, yes. Epson has released firmware updates for specific models that address false hardware error triggers. Go to Epson's support website, find your printer model, and check for available firmware updates. If the printer connects to the internet, you can also check for updates through the printer's own settings menu.
