E-03

Epson Printer

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Error E-03 on an Epson printer means the printer cover or lid is open. The printer will not print until all covers are fully closed. Close all covers firmly and the error should clear immediately.

Affected Models

  • Epson Expression Home XP-430
  • Epson Expression Home XP-440
  • Epson WorkForce WF-2650
  • Epson WorkForce WF-2750
  • Epson Expression ET-2750

Common Causes

  • The front or top cover was left open after loading paper or changing ink
  • The printer cover is not fully latched — it is ajar by a small amount
  • Debris or a scrap of paper is caught in the cover hinge, preventing full closure
  • The cover-open detection sensor is dirty or malfunctioning
  • The cover latch mechanism is worn or broken

How to Fix It

  1. Look at all covers on the printer. Check the scanner lid, front cover, and ink cartridge access panel.

On Epson all-in-one models, also check the ADF (automatic document feeder) cover at the top.

  2. Open each cover completely and close it again with a firm push until it clicks.

A cover that is only slightly open will still trigger the sensor.

  3. Check the cover area for paper scraps or debris that may be preventing full closure.

Even a small piece of paper wedged in the hinge can keep the sensor from reading 'closed.'

  4. If you recently changed ink cartridges, make sure the ink compartment door is fully closed.

This is the most common cause of E-03 after ink changes.

  5. Power the printer off and back on. The error should now be cleared.

If E-03 returns immediately after startup, the sensor itself needs inspection.

When to Call a Professional

If all covers are firmly closed and E-03 still appears, the cover sensor may be faulty. Epson service centers can replace door sensors for around $40 to $70. For budget Epson models, replacement may cost less than repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does E-03 show up after I change ink cartridges?

The ink cartridge access door is a common culprit. After installing new cartridges, it is easy to close the door without it fully latching. Open it again and push it firmly shut until you feel it click.

Can I print without closing the cover?

No. Epson printers have safety interlocks that prevent printing with an open cover. This protects you from the moving ink carriage and wet ink during printing. Close the cover completely before sending any print jobs.

The error cleared once but keeps coming back. What is wrong?

A worn or broken latch is the likely cause. The cover closes initially but vibration during printing causes it to pop slightly open. A technician can replace the latch, or you can check for a simple clip repair.
