E-06

Epson Printer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Epson error E-06 indicates a problem with the ink cartridge or the print head on your Epson printer. The printer detected an issue it cannot recover from automatically — printing is stopped until you intervene. Reinstalling the cartridges or running a print head cleaning often resolves this.

Affected Models

  • Epson EcoTank ET-4800
  • Epson WorkForce WF-2960
  • Epson Expression Home XP-4200
  • Epson Expression Photo XP-8700
  • Epson EcoTank ET-3850

Common Causes

  • An ink cartridge is not installed correctly or has poor contact with the print head
  • The print head has a partial clog that is preventing ink from flowing on one or more nozzles
  • A cartridge that was removed and reinstalled incorrectly has introduced an air bubble
  • The printer has been sitting unused for an extended period, causing ink to partially dry
  • A non-genuine ink cartridge is causing a communication error with the print head

How to Fix It

  1. Turn the printer off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. The printer will run a brief self-test on startup that may clear the error.

Sometimes E-06 is triggered by a transient communication error that clears on restart.

  2. Open the cartridge access door and check each cartridge. Remove and firmly reinsert each one to ensure solid contact.

A cartridge that is slightly loose will cause print head communication errors.

  3. Run a print head cleaning cycle. On the printer control panel, go to Menu > Maintenance > Head Cleaning. Alternatively, use the Epson printer software on your computer.

A cleaning cycle uses ink to flush the nozzles. Start with one cycle and check print quality afterward with a nozzle check print.

  4. Print a nozzle check pattern after cleaning. Go to Menu > Maintenance > Print Head Nozzle Check. If the pattern shows gaps or missing lines, run another cleaning cycle.

Run a maximum of 2 to 3 cleaning cycles before stopping. Too many cycles can deplete ink quickly without improving the result.

  5. If cleaning cycles do not clear E-06, try a Power Cleaning if your printer model offers it. Go to Menu > Maintenance > Power Cleaning.

Power Cleaning is a more intense cycle that uses significantly more ink. Use it only if standard cleaning fails.

When to Call a Professional

Error E-06 is usually fixable at home with cartridge maintenance or a cleaning cycle. If repeated cleaning cycles do not clear the error, the print head may have a deeper clog or hardware issue. Epson Support can guide you through advanced cleaning. Contact them at epson.com/support.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cleaning cycles is too many?

Running more than 3 cleaning cycles in a row is generally not productive and wastes a significant amount of ink. If 3 cycles have not resolved the issue, the clog is likely deep and needs a different approach — such as Power Cleaning or manual print head cleaning. Frequent cleaning also fills the ink pad inside the printer faster.

What causes a print head to clog?

The most common cause is leaving the printer unused for weeks or months. Ink inside the print head nozzles dries out when the printer sits idle. Printing at least once a week — even just a test page — keeps the ink moving and prevents clogs.

Is it possible to clean an Epson print head manually?

Yes, on some Epson models the print head can be removed and soaked in warm water to dissolve dried ink. This is a more advanced procedure and carries some risk of damage if done incorrectly. Epson has instructions for print head soaking on their support pages for specific models. Only attempt this if standard and power cleaning cycles have both failed.
