E-80

Epson Printer

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Epson error E-80 means there is a serious fault in the ink system — either an ink delivery problem or a print head issue. The printer has detected that ink is not flowing correctly to the print head. All printing stops until this is resolved.

Affected Models

  • Epson EcoTank ET-2800
  • Epson EcoTank ET-4850
  • Epson EcoTank ET-3850
  • Epson WorkForce WF-4830
  • Epson EcoTank ET-5850

Common Causes

  • Air bubbles have entered the ink tubes and are blocking ink flow to the print head
  • An ink tank is empty or was not refilled correctly, causing the system to run dry
  • The print head is clogged with dried ink and cannot receive fresh ink
  • A cracked or kinked ink tube is preventing ink from reaching the print head
  • The print head itself has failed and needs replacement

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the printer, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on.

A temporary ink delivery error caused by a sensor glitch may clear on its own after a restart.

  2. Check all ink tanks. Make sure every tank has ink and that the caps are properly seated.

On EcoTank models, even if one tank looks full, check that the fill cap is firmly closed — an open cap lets air into the system.

  3. Run a head cleaning cycle from the printer's maintenance menu or from the Epson software on your computer.

Head cleaning uses ink to push air bubbles and dried ink out of the print head nozzles. Run it once and then test print.

  4. Print a nozzle check pattern to see which color channels are blocked.

A broken or missing line in the pattern tells you exactly which ink channel has the problem.

  5. If cleaning does not work after two attempts, try soaking the print head. Place a folded damp paper towel under the print head for 10 minutes to dissolve stubborn dried ink.

Do not use alcohol — it can damage the print head nozzle plate. Use plain water only.

When to Call a Professional

If multiple head cleaning cycles do not resolve E-80, the print head may be permanently clogged or failed. A new Epson print head can cost $30 to $80 for the part alone. For EcoTank models, professional print head replacement typically runs $80 to $160 including labor. If the printer is out of warranty, a new unit may be the better choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many times should I run head cleaning before giving up?

Run the cleaning cycle a maximum of two or three times in a row. More than that wastes ink and can overheat the print head. If two cleanings do not fix it, let the printer sit overnight and try again in the morning.

Can I still print in black and white if only a color ink channel is blocked?

Not on most Epson printers. Epson printers typically refuse to print at all if any ink channel is blocked or empty, even for black-and-white documents. You need to resolve the blocked channel first.

Will refilling the ink tanks fix E-80?

If the error was caused by a tank running dry, refilling it and running a head cleaning cycle will usually fix it. However, if the print head dried out completely while the tank was empty, it may be permanently clogged. The sooner you refill empty tanks, the better the chances of recovery.
