I-51

Epson Printer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Error I-51 means your Epson printer cannot communicate with one or more ink cartridges. The printer's chip reader is not getting a valid signal from the cartridge's electronic chip. This is usually caused by dirty contacts, an incompatible cartridge, or a faulty chip.

Affected Models

  • Epson Expression Home XP Series
  • Epson EcoTank ET Series
  • Epson WorkForce WF Series
  • Epson Expression Premium XP Series
  • Epson WorkForce Pro WF Series

Common Causes

  • The gold electrical contacts on the ink cartridge or in the carriage are dirty with dried ink or dust
  • A third-party or refilled cartridge has a chip that is not recognized by this Epson printer model
  • The cartridge was not fully pushed into its slot and the chip is not making contact with the reader
  • The cartridge chip is damaged or was reset incorrectly during a refill process
  • The chip reader contacts inside the printer carriage are bent or corroded

How to Fix It

  1. Open the ink cartridge cover and remove the cartridge showing the error. On most Epson models, press the cartridge inward to release it.

If you are not sure which cartridge is causing I-51, remove all cartridges and reinstall them one at a time.

  2. Locate the gold or copper chip on the front or bottom of the cartridge. Use a dry lint-free cloth to gently wipe the chip contacts.

Do not use water or alcohol on the chip — moisture can damage it. A dry wipe is usually enough.

  3. Look inside the cartridge slot in the printer carriage. Gently clean the row of gold pins or contacts with a lint-free cloth.

If any pins look bent, they may need to be gently straightened with a toothpick. Do not use metal tools.

  4. Reinstall the cartridge by pushing it firmly into its slot until it clicks. Make sure the color-coded slot matches the cartridge color label.

A cartridge seated at an angle will not make proper contact with the chip reader.

  5. Close the cartridge cover and power the printer off and on. Check if I-51 clears. If the error continues, try installing a genuine Epson cartridge.

If a genuine Epson cartridge also triggers I-51 in the same slot, the chip reader contacts in that slot may be faulty.

When to Call a Professional

I-51 is usually fixable at home by cleaning contacts or replacing the cartridge. If the error appears on all cartridge slots with multiple cartridges, the carriage chip reader may be damaged. Carriage replacement requires a technician and may not be cost-effective on budget printers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do third-party Epson ink cartridges cause error I-51?

They can. Epson printers require cartridges with a chip that matches the printer's firmware. Some third-party and refilled cartridges use cloned chips that may work on older firmware but fail after a firmware update. If you recently updated your printer's firmware and I-51 appeared, the third-party chip may no longer be compatible.

Can I still print if only one cartridge has I-51?

Usually no. Epson printers stop all printing when any ink cartridge cannot be read. Some models allow black-only printing if only a color cartridge is unrecognized, but this is not universal. Resolving the I-51 error on all cartridges is required for normal operation.

How do I know which cartridge is causing I-51?

The printer's display or status monitor on your computer usually highlights the specific cartridge with an error. If not, remove all cartridges and install them one at a time — the error will appear when you install the faulty one. Some Epson models show a blinking light above the problem cartridge slot.
