I-62

Epson Printer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Epson error I-62 indicates a problem with the ink delivery system. The printer is having trouble moving ink from the cartridges or tanks to the print head. This results in poor print quality or the printer refusing to print at all.

Affected Models

  • Epson EcoTank ET-2720
  • Epson EcoTank ET-2760
  • Epson EcoTank ET-4760
  • Epson EcoTank ET-15000
  • Epson WorkForce WF-2860

Common Causes

  • One or more ink tanks or cartridges are nearly empty or completely out of ink
  • An air bubble has formed in the ink delivery tube, blocking the flow of ink
  • The ink tank lid was not properly closed after refilling, allowing air to enter the system
  • The print head nozzles are severely clogged and the cleaning pump cannot push ink through
  • Ink dried inside the delivery tube during a long period of non-use

How to Fix It

  1. Check the ink level in all tanks. On EcoTank models, visually inspect the transparent tanks on the side of the printer. Refill any tanks that are low or empty.

Use only genuine Epson EcoTank ink. Third-party inks with different viscosity can cause delivery problems.

  2. Make sure all ink tank caps or cartridge covers are fully closed and sealed. An improperly closed cap allows air to enter the ink system.

On EcoTank models, press the cap firmly until you feel it seat — a loose cap is a very common cause of I-62.

  3. Run a power cleaning cycle. On the printer, go to Settings > Maintenance > Power Cleaning. This is a stronger cleaning cycle that can clear air bubbles and blockages.

Power cleaning uses significantly more ink than a standard cleaning cycle. Only do it once or twice — not repeatedly.

  4. If the printer has been sitting unused for more than a month, print several test pages and run two or three standard cleaning cycles to prime the ink system.

Ink can dry and block tubes during extended non-use. Regular printing (at least weekly) prevents this problem.

  5. Run a nozzle check. Go to Settings > Maintenance > Nozzle Check and print the test pattern. If large sections of the pattern are missing, more cleaning is needed.

The nozzle check shows exactly which colors and nozzles are affected, helping you understand the extent of the blockage.

When to Call a Professional

If error I-62 persists after filling ink and running multiple cleaning cycles, the print head may need professional service or replacement. Contact Epson Support at 1-800-463-7766. For EcoTank models, Epson offers specific ink system servicing at authorized service centers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do air bubbles form in Epson's ink system?

Air bubbles usually enter the ink system when an ink tank runs completely empty. The pump that moves ink then pulls air instead of ink into the tubes. Refilling before the tank is completely empty prevents air from entering. If air has already entered, a power cleaning cycle can usually flush it out.

How do I prevent the print head from clogging due to non-use?

Print at least one page per week, including a color document, to keep all ink channels flowing. If you know you will not use the printer for a month or more, run a cleaning cycle before leaving it. Store the printer in a horizontal position away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Is it safe to use third-party ink in an Epson EcoTank?

Technically yes — EcoTank printers accept bottled ink refills and are not locked to Epson brand ink. However, Epson's formulation is specifically engineered for their delivery systems. Third-party inks with different viscosity or surface tension can cause I-62 delivery errors and may clog nozzles faster.
