Poor Print Quality

Epson Printer

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Poor print quality on an Epson printer is most often caused by clogged print head nozzles or low ink. Run a nozzle check first to identify which colour channels are affected, then run a cleaning cycle for those channels.

Affected Models

  • Epson EcoTank Series
  • Epson Expression Series
  • Epson WorkForce Series
  • Epson XP Series
  • Epson ET Series

Common Causes

  • Clogged print head nozzles causing missing or faded colours
  • Low or empty ink cartridge or tank
  • Wrong paper type setting for the paper loaded
  • Print quality setting too low in the print dialog
  • Print head alignment off — text or colours appear blurry or misaligned
  • Printing on wrong side of photo paper

How to Fix It

  1. Run a nozzle check.

Open the Epson maintenance utility → Print Head Nozzle Check. The printed pattern shows which colour channels have clogged nozzles. Run a cleaning cycle only for the affected colours to avoid wasting ink on channels that are already clear.

  2. Run a print head cleaning cycle.

From the Epson maintenance utility → Head Cleaning. Select only the colours shown as blocked in the nozzle check. Print another nozzle check after cleaning to verify improvement.

  3. Check ink levels.

For EcoTank models, look through the transparent tank window to check ink levels. For cartridge models, open Epson Status Monitor. Replace or refill any empty or critically low colour.

  4. Check paper type and print quality settings.

Open the print dialog on your computer and verify the paper type matches what is loaded (e.g. Photo Paper if using glossy paper). Also check that the print quality is not set to Draft — Draft mode uses less ink and produces noticeably lower quality output.

  5. Run a print head alignment.

If prints are blurry or colours are misregistered (one colour shifted from another), run a Print Head Alignment from the Epson maintenance utility. The utility prints a test pattern and asks you to select the best-aligned version for each row.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning cycles and alignment do not restore print quality and the nozzle check pattern is consistently broken across multiple colours, the print head has dried out and may need replacement.
