Print Head Clog

Epson Printer

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A clogged Epson print head is caused by dried ink in the nozzles. Run a Head Cleaning cycle from the Epson printer software first — this clears most clogs without disassembly.

Affected Models

  • Epson EcoTank Series
  • Epson Expression Series
  • Epson WorkForce Series
  • Epson XP Series
  • Epson ET Series
  • Epson Stylus Series

Common Causes

  • Printer left unused for weeks or months — ink dries and hardens in the nozzles
  • Running the printer until ink tanks or cartridges are completely empty
  • Low print frequency — automatic maintenance cycles cannot prevent long-term drying
  • Air entering the ink path from running empty tanks

How to Fix It

  1. Run a Head Cleaning cycle.

Open Epson Status Monitor on your computer → Maintenance → Head Cleaning. Select all colours and run the cycle. Print a nozzle check pattern afterwards to check if the clog has cleared.

  2. Run a Power Cleaning cycle for stubborn clogs.

If standard cleaning does not fully restore the nozzle pattern, go to Maintenance → Power Cleaning (available on many Epson models). This is a more aggressive flush. Be aware that Power Cleaning uses a significant amount of ink.

  3. Soak the print head manually (severe clogs).

If software cleaning fails after two attempts, remove the print head from the carriage. Place it nozzle-side down on a cloth dampened with warm distilled water. Leave to soak for 30–60 minutes. Pat gently on a clean damp cloth, reinstall, and run a standard cleaning cycle.

  4. Print a nozzle check pattern to confirm recovery.

From the Epson maintenance menu, print a Nozzle Check. A complete unbroken pattern across all colours confirms the clog has cleared. If one colour remains blocked, run one more targeted cleaning cycle for that colour.

When to Call a Professional

If multiple Power Cleaning cycles do not restore the nozzle check pattern, the print head has dried out beyond recovery. Epson print heads can be replaced, but on lower-cost models replacement may approach the cost of a new printer.
