Scanner Not Working

Epson Printer

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

If your Epson scanner is not working, start by checking that the scanner lid lock is in the unlocked position. Many Epson scanners have a physical lock switch on the bottom or side — it must be set to unlocked for scanning to work.

Affected Models

  • Epson Expression Series
  • Epson WorkForce Series
  • Epson EcoTank Series
  • Epson Perfection Series
  • Epson XP Series

Common Causes

  • Scanner lock switch in the locked position — carriage is physically immobilised
  • Epson Scan driver not installed or outdated
  • Scanner not detected over Wi-Fi — USB required for some scan functions
  • Scan software configured to look for a different device
  • USB cable or network connection problem

How to Fix It

  1. Check the scanner lock switch.

Turn the printer or scanner upside down and look for a small physical lock switch. It is usually labelled with a padlock icon. Slide it to the unlocked position. A locked carriage produces a loud knocking noise when scanning is attempted.

  2. Install or update the Epson Scan driver.

Download the latest Epson Scan 2 software for your printer model from Epson's official support page. Uninstall the existing scan driver first, then install the new version. An outdated or missing scan driver is the most common software cause of scanner not working.

  3. Use a USB connection for scanning.

Some Epson scan functions do not work over Wi-Fi depending on the software version and operating system. Connect the printer directly to your computer with a USB cable and try scanning again.

  4. Set the correct scanner in your scanning software.

Open Epson Scan 2 or your preferred scan application. In the source or device selection, choose your specific Epson model. If multiple devices are listed, ensure the correct one is selected.

When to Call a Professional

If the scanner lock is disengaged, the driver is current, and the scanner lamp lights up but does not scan, the scan carriage motor or lamp has failed — contact Epson support.
