W-01

Epson Printer

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Epson error W-01 means there is a paper jam inside your printer. A sheet of paper is stuck somewhere in the paper path. You need to find and carefully remove the jammed paper to clear the error.

Affected Models

  • Epson EcoTank ET-2800
  • Epson EcoTank ET-4850
  • Epson WorkForce WF-2960
  • Epson Expression Home XP-4200
  • Epson Expression Photo XP-8700

Common Causes

  • A sheet of paper got wrinkled or folded as it entered the printer and became stuck
  • Multiple sheets fed at once because they were stuck together
  • The paper loaded in the tray is too thick, too thin, or damp
  • The paper feed rollers are dirty and not gripping the paper evenly
  • A small piece of previously torn paper is still stuck inside the printer

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the printer. Open the front cover and the paper output tray area. Gently pull out any paper you can see.

Always pull paper in the direction it was traveling — usually forward toward the output tray.

  2. Check the rear of the printer. If your model has a rear access panel, open it and look for jammed paper.

Paper often gets stuck in the back rollers where you cannot see it from the front.

  3. Open the scanner lid to access the print head area. If paper is stuck around the print head carriage, gently remove it.

Be careful not to touch the print head nozzles or the flat ribbon cable. They are delicate.

  4. Fan the paper stack and reload it into the tray. Make sure the paper guides are snug against the edges.

Sheets stuck together from humidity are a top cause of jams. Fanning separates them.

  5. Turn the printer back on. It should clear the W-01 error and be ready to print.

If the error comes back, run a paper feed cleaning. Check your printer's utility software for this option.

When to Call a Professional

Paper jams are almost always fixable at home. If you cleared the paper but the W-01 error keeps appearing, there may be a torn piece hidden deep inside. A repair technician can open the printer to find and remove stubborn jams for $30 to $60.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Epson keep jamming paper?

Frequent jams usually mean the paper rollers are dirty. Over time, dust and paper fiber build up on the rollers and reduce their grip. Clean them with a slightly damp lint-free cloth, or run the roller cleaning utility.

Can I use any paper in my Epson printer?

Use standard printer paper that is 75 to 90 gsm weight. Avoid paper that is wrinkled, damp, curled, or too thin. Specialty paper should only be used in trays or settings designed for it.

What if I tore the paper while pulling it out?

Use a flashlight to look inside the printer for any remaining scraps. Even a small piece of paper can cause repeated jams. Check behind the rollers and near the print head carriage.
