W-03

Epson Printer

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Epson error W-03 means there is a paper jam at the rear of the printer. A sheet of paper got stuck while being fed through or ejected out the back. This is a minor error — you can usually clear it at home in just a few minutes.

Affected Models

  • Epson EcoTank ET-2760
  • Epson WorkForce WF-2850
  • Epson WorkForce WF-3820
  • Epson Expression Home XP-4100
  • Epson EcoTank ET-4760

Common Causes

  • A sheet of paper became stuck while exiting through the rear paper path
  • The paper being used is too thick, glossy, or heavy for the rear feed slot
  • A small torn piece from a previous jam is still lodged inside the rear feed area
  • The paper was loaded at an angle and fed crookedly into the printer
  • The rear paper tray guide is misaligned, allowing paper to shift as it feeds

How to Fix It

  1. Turn the printer off and unplug it from the wall outlet.

Always power off before reaching into the printer. Internal parts can be hot and rollers can engage unexpectedly.

  2. Open the rear access panel or rear cover on the back of the printer. This is usually a flap you pull outward or downward.

On some Epson models there is no rear cover — the paper is accessible directly through the rear slot. Check your manual if unsure.

  3. Gently pull any visible jammed paper straight out of the rear opening. Use both hands and pull slowly without jerking.

If the paper tears, use a flashlight to locate every piece and remove them all before proceeding.

  4. Inspect the rear paper path with a flashlight for any remaining scraps. Remove anything you find before closing the cover.

Even a tiny sliver of paper can trigger W-03 again on the very next print job.

  5. Close the rear cover, plug the printer back in, and power it on. Print a test page to confirm the error has cleared.

If the error reappears, open the rear cover again and inspect more carefully. The remaining scrap may have shifted.

When to Call a Professional

Error W-03 is almost always a simple DIY fix. If the jam keeps returning after you have cleared it, a small paper scrap may still be hidden inside. A repair technician can inspect and clear internal obstructions for $30 to $50.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Epson printer keep jamming at the rear?

Recurring rear jams almost always mean a small piece of paper is still stuck inside. Check thoroughly with a flashlight after clearing each jam. Also make sure you are using standard copy paper within the supported weight range for your model.

Can I reach the jam from the front of the printer instead?

On most Epson printers, W-03 specifically points to the rear paper path. Trying to pull paper from the front tray may tear it and leave a scrap inside. Always clear W-03 jams from the rear access point.

What kind of paper causes the most rear jams?

Glossy photo paper, heavy cardstock, and damp paper are the most common culprits. Very thin paper can also fold and bunch up in the paper path. For everyday printing, use standard 20 lb (75 gsm) copy paper for the most reliable results.
