HP Printer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The error 02 means the print carriage inside your HP printer is stuck or jammed. The carriage is the part that moves back and forth carrying the ink cartridges. Something is blocking its movement, such as a paper jam, packing material, or debris.

Affected Models

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 8000 Series
  • HP ENVY 6000 Series
  • HP DeskJet 4100 Series
  • HP OfficeJet 5200 Series
  • HP ENVY Inspire 7900 Series

Common Causes

  • A piece of torn paper is jammed in the carriage path, blocking its movement
  • Packing material or protective tape was not fully removed during initial setup
  • A foreign object like a paper clip or sticky note fell inside the printer
  • The carriage rails are dirty or have dried ink buildup causing friction
  • An ink cartridge is not seated properly and is catching on the printer body

How to Fix It

  1. Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access door. Look inside for any visible paper jams, packing tape, or foreign objects.

Use a flashlight to get a clear view inside the printer. Check both sides of the carriage path.

  2. Gently try to slide the carriage left and right by hand. It should move freely across the full width of the printer.

If it feels stuck at a certain point, look carefully at that spot for a paper scrap or obstruction.

  3. Remove all ink cartridges and inspect each one. Make sure no protective tape or clips remain on the cartridges.

Also check that the cartridge contacts are clean and none of the cartridges are cracked or leaking.

  4. Clean the carriage rails with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water. Wipe away any dried ink or dust buildup.

The carriage rails are the metal or plastic tracks that the carriage slides along. Clean them gently.

  5. Reinstall the cartridges, close the access door, and turn the printer back on. The carriage should initialize and move to its home position.

If the error clears but returns frequently, the carriage belt may be wearing out.

When to Call a Professional

If you cannot find any visible obstruction and the carriage still will not move freely, the carriage motor or belt may be damaged. Carriage motor or belt replacement costs $50 to $120 for parts, plus $50 to $100 for labor. For budget inkjet printers, this repair may cost more than the printer is worth. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the print carriage?

The print carriage is the part inside the printer that holds the ink cartridges. It moves left and right across the paper while the cartridges spray ink. Think of it as a cart on a track — if the track is blocked, the cart cannot move.

I just set up my new printer and got error 02. What happened?

New printers come with packing materials like tape, clips, and foam inserts. If any of these were not removed during unboxing, they can block the carriage. Open the cartridge access door and check for any remaining packing materials.

Can I damage the printer by moving the carriage by hand?

It is safe to gently slide the carriage by hand when the printer is turned off. Do not force it if there is strong resistance — you could damage the carriage belt. Gentle movement is fine for checking if the path is clear.
