0x6100004E

HP Printer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 0x6100004E means the print carriage inside your HP printer is jammed and cannot complete its startup movement. The carriage holds the ink cartridges and must sweep left and right during startup. Something is physically blocking that movement — finding and removing it usually clears the error right away.

Affected Models

  • HP OfficeJet 4650 Series
  • HP OfficeJet Pro 6960 Series
  • HP Envy 4510 Series
  • HP OfficeJet 3830 Series
  • HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 5200 Series

Common Causes

  • A scrap of torn paper is lodged in the carriage path inside the printer
  • A foreign object such as a paper clip, staple, or piece of tape has fallen inside the printer
  • The carriage belt has slipped off its track and is bunching up and blocking movement
  • An ink cartridge is not fully seated and is sticking out enough to catch on the printer wall
  • The printer was moved or jarred recently, and the carriage has come off its guide rail

How to Fix It

  1. Turn the printer off completely and unplug the power cord. Wait 60 seconds. This fully resets the carriage position sensors.

Unplugging is important — just pressing the power button sometimes leaves the printer in a partial state.

  2. Open the ink cartridge access door. Look into the printer with a flashlight. Scan the entire width of the carriage track — left side, right side, and underneath the carriage — for any paper scraps, foreign objects, or packing material.

Bits of torn paper are the most common culprit. They are often very small and easy to miss without a light.

  3. With the printer unplugged and the door open, gently push the carriage from one side to the other by hand. It should glide smoothly with light resistance. If it stops, catches, or feels gritty, there is still an obstruction or the belt has shifted.

Never force the carriage. If it will not move, stop and look more carefully for what is blocking it.

  4. Check each ink cartridge. Remove them one at a time and firmly reinsert each one until it clicks. A cartridge that protrudes even a few millimetres can jam the carriage against the printer wall.

Color and black cartridges must both be correctly seated — the printer checks both during startup.

  5. Plug the printer back in and turn it on. Watch and listen during startup — you should hear the carriage sweep left and right. If it moves and the error clears, you are done. If it still fails, power off and repeat the inspection.

If the error is gone but printing is poor, run a printhead cleaning from the printer's settings menu.

When to Call a Professional

If you have carefully cleared all obstructions and the carriage still does not move freely during startup, the carriage belt or carriage motor may be damaged. A jammed carriage that was forced will sometimes snap the belt. HP OfficeJet carriage belts are replaceable but the repair requires partial disassembly — a technician can do this in under an hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave packing foam inside the printer by accident?

Yes — this is surprisingly common with new printers or printers that were recently shipped. Printers often ship with a small orange or pink plastic tab locking the carriage in place. If that tab was not removed before first use, it will cause this exact error. Check for any orange plastic pieces inside the printer.

The carriage moves fine by hand but the error still shows at startup. Why?

The startup carriage sweep is faster and more forceful than manual movement. A very small obstruction that allows slow manual movement may still stop the faster powered sweep. Inspect more carefully, paying attention to the far left and far right ends of the carriage track where debris tends to collect.

My printer is only a few weeks old. Is this a defect?

On new printers, error 0x6100004E is almost always caused by leftover packing material or the orange shipping tab not being removed. Check the setup guide that came with your printer for instructions on removing shipping locks. If the printer is truly clear of all packing material and still errors, contact HP support — it may qualify for a replacement under warranty.
