95

HP Printer

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 95 on HP printers means there is a problem with one of the ink cartridges. The printer detected an issue — like an incompatible, empty, or incorrectly installed cartridge — and stopped printing. Checking and replacing the cartridge usually resolves this quickly.

Affected Models

  • HP Deskjet 2600
  • HP Deskjet 3700
  • HP Deskjet 3752
  • HP Envy 6000
  • HP Envy 6020

Common Causes

  • An ink cartridge is not properly seated and does not have a solid connection
  • One or more cartridges are completely empty and need to be replaced
  • A third-party or refilled cartridge is not recognized as compatible
  • The cartridge's electrical contacts are dirty and cannot be read by the printer
  • The cartridge was installed incorrectly — for example, a black cartridge in the color slot

How to Fix It

  1. Open the ink cartridge access door and remove all cartridges. Set them on a clean, lint-free cloth.

Always turn the printer on before opening the access door — this moves the carriage to the center where you can reach the cartridges.

  2. Check the ink levels. HP printers show ink levels in the HP Smart app or on the printer display. If any cartridge is empty or critically low, replace it.

Even one empty cartridge can prevent the printer from printing at all, depending on the model and settings.

  3. Clean the cartridge contacts. Use a dry, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the copper-colored electrical contacts on the bottom of each cartridge.

Do not use water or alcohol on the contacts — a dry cloth is all that is needed and safer.

  4. Reinsert each cartridge firmly into the correct slot. The color cartridge goes in one side and the black in the other. Each should click firmly into place.

Make sure each cartridge is in the correct slot — placing them in the wrong slot can trigger error 95.

  5. If the error persists, replace the cartridge that the printer indicates is the problem. Use a genuine HP cartridge rather than a third-party replacement.

HP firmware updates have made some printers reject non-HP cartridges. A genuine HP cartridge eliminates any compatibility issue.

When to Call a Professional

Error 95 is almost always a cartridge issue you can fix at home. You do not need a repair technician. If replacing with a fresh genuine HP cartridge does not fix the error, contact HP Support at support.hp.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

My cartridge is new but I still see error 95. What is wrong?

A new cartridge can still trigger this error if the orange protective seal was not fully removed before installing. Also check that you pressed the cartridge firmly into its slot until it clicked. If the cartridge is seated correctly and the seal is off, try cleaning the contacts.

Can I print in black only if one of my color cartridges is the problem?

Some HP printers allow you to print in black-only mode when a color cartridge is empty or problematic. In the printer settings or print dialog, look for an option to use only black ink. Not all models support this mode — some require all cartridges to be functional before they will print at all.

How often should I replace HP ink cartridges?

This depends entirely on how much you print. HP cartridges have a page yield listed on the box — standard cartridges yield around 120 to 200 pages, while XL cartridges yield 300 to 500 pages. If you print infrequently, ink can also dry out before the cartridge is empty. HP recommends printing at least once a week to keep the ink flowing.
