C5
HP Printer
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Error C5 on HP Deskjet and Envy printers means the printer cannot communicate with one or more ink cartridges. The chip on the cartridge is either dirty, damaged, or not making proper contact with the printer. In most cases, removing and reseating the cartridges fixes this within minutes.
Affected Models
- HP Deskjet 1110 Series
- HP Deskjet 2130 Series
- HP Envy 4520 Series
- HP Envy 6000 Series
- HP Deskjet Plus 4100 Series
Common Causes
- The cartridge chip contacts are dirty or have a thin film of dried ink blocking the connection
- A cartridge was bumped or jarred loose and is no longer seated correctly
- The cartridge is counterfeit or refilled and its chip is not recognized by the printer
- A recent firmware update changed how the printer checks cartridge authenticity
- The cartridge is at the end of its life and its chip is reporting an error state
How to Fix It
-
Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the center. Turn the printer off while the carriage is still in the center position.
Turning off with the carriage centered gives you better access to clean the contacts.
-
Remove each cartridge one at a time. Look at the copper contact chip on the side of the cartridge. If it looks smudged or has dried ink on it, wipe it gently with a dry lint-free cloth.
Do not use water or cleaning fluid — moisture can damage the chip contacts.
-
Reinsert each cartridge and press down firmly until you hear it click. Close the access door. Turn the printer back on.
A cartridge that is even slightly loose will not make reliable contact and will trigger a C5 or similar error.
-
If the error continues, remove the cartridges again. Use a fresh dry cotton swab to clean the contact pins inside each cartridge slot in the printer.
Look for any bent contact pins inside the carriage — a bent pin will prevent the cartridge from being read.
-
If the error still shows, try installing a brand-new genuine HP cartridge. If the new cartridge clears the error, the old cartridge was at fault.
HP printers are particularly strict about cartridge compatibility. A compatible cartridge from another brand may clear or may not — results vary.
When to Call a Professional
If the C5 error continues after trying fresh genuine HP cartridges and cleaning the carriage contacts, the carriage board that reads the cartridge chips may be faulty. This is an internal electronic component and requires a technician to diagnose and replace. For budget-range HP Deskjet printers, replacement is usually more cost-effective than repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did I get the C5 error after a firmware update?
HP periodically releases firmware updates that tighten cartridge authentication requirements. Some updates block previously working third-party or refilled cartridges. If your cartridges worked before the update, you may need to switch to genuine HP cartridges. Rolling back firmware is technically possible but not officially supported by HP.
Can a low ink level trigger the C5 error?
Occasionally yes — when a cartridge is completely empty, its chip may enter an error state that looks like a communication failure. Replace the cartridge if you know it is empty, even before trying other steps.
Is it safe to keep printing if I dismiss the C5 error?
On most HP models the printer will refuse to continue printing until the cartridge issue is resolved. You cannot easily print through a C5 error the way you can bypass some low-ink warnings. Fix the cartridge issue first — it only takes a few minutes in most cases.
