Ink Cartridge Not Recognized
HP Printer
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
If your HP printer does not recognize a cartridge, remove it, clean the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, and firmly reinsert it. If using a third-party cartridge, HP printers may block it after a firmware update.
Affected Models
- HP OfficeJet
- HP DeskJet
- HP ENVY
- HP Photosmart
- HP OfficeJet Pro
Common Causes
- Dirty or oxidised copper contacts on the cartridge or carriage
- Third-party or refilled cartridge blocked by a recent firmware update
- Cartridge not fully seated in the carriage
- Damaged cartridge chip
- Faulty carriage contact spring in the printer
How to Fix It
-
Remove the cartridge and clean the contacts.
Open the cartridge access door and remove the cartridge. Using a dry, lint-free cloth, gently wipe the copper-coloured contacts on the bottom of the cartridge. Also wipe the corresponding contacts inside the carriage slot. Reinsert firmly.
-
Reseat the cartridge firmly.
Push the cartridge down into the slot until you hear or feel a click. A partially seated cartridge will not be recognised. Close the access door and wait 30 seconds for the printer to detect the cartridge.
-
Power cycle the printer.
Switch off the printer, unplug it from the wall for 60 seconds, then plug back in and power on. A power cycle sometimes clears a cartridge recognition error caused by a temporary controller glitch.
-
Check the firmware version if using third-party cartridges.
HP regularly releases firmware updates that block non-HP cartridges. If the error appeared after a recent firmware update, you can roll back the firmware via the HP printer software on your computer, or switch to genuine HP cartridges.
When to Call a Professional
If cleaning the contacts and reseating the cartridge does not help, and the cartridge is genuine HP, the carriage contact spring may be damaged — contact HP support or a service centre.
