Waste Ink Pad Full / Ink Absorber Full

HP Inkjet Printer

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

HP's waste ink pad (also called the ink absorber or service station pad) is a sponge inside the printer that absorbs excess ink from print head cleaning cycles. When it is full, the printer stops working to prevent ink flooding. Replacement or service is required.

Affected Models

  • HP DeskJet series
  • HP Envy series
  • HP OfficeJet series
  • HP PhotSmart series

Common Causes

  • Waste ink pad has reached its designed capacity after many print head cleaning cycles
  • Frequent manual cleaning cycles performed — each drains ink into the pad
  • Printer used intensively over several years
  • High-coverage print jobs causing more cleaning cycles
  • Draft printing with poor quality settings triggering more auto-cleans

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm the error with HP Print and Scan Doctor.

Download HP Print and Scan Doctor (free from hp.com). Run it and check the diagnosis — it will confirm whether the waste ink pad is genuinely full or just showing a false warning. Some HP printers display this warning before the pad is actually saturated.

  2. Contact HP support or a service centre.

HP printers do not allow users to reset the waste ink counter themselves (unlike Epson printers which have a free reset utility). The official solution is to take the printer to an HP-authorised service centre to have the waste pad replaced and the counter reset. Contact HP at support.hp.com to find authorised service in your area.

  3. Evaluate repair versus replace.

Waste ink pad replacement at a service centre typically costs £40–£80. For budget printers (under £60–£80 new), purchasing a replacement printer may be more economical. For higher-end OfficeJet Pro or Envy models, repair is usually worthwhile.

  4. Reduce cleaning cycles going forward.

Once repaired, reduce the frequency of automatic print head cleaning to extend the new pad's life. In HP printer software: Printer Properties → Services → clean printheads — only run this when print quality degrades. Do not run cleaning cycles repeatedly — each cycle uses ink and fills the waste pad faster.

  5. Use the printer in draft mode for casual printing.

High-quality photo printing and print head cleaning cycles fill the waste pad faster. For everyday documents, use Draft or Normal quality settings. This reduces ink usage per page and decreases the frequency of automatic cleaning maintenance cycles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reset the HP waste ink pad counter myself?

HP does not officially provide a counter reset tool for consumers, unlike Epson which offers a free Adjustment Program. Some third-party tools claim to reset HP waste ink counters, but these are unofficial and unsupported. The correct solution is HP-authorised service to replace the physical pad and reset the counter. Using unofficial tools without replacing the physical pad means the printer may overflow with ink even after the counter is reset.
