Not Cooling
Bosch Refrigerator
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
If your Bosch fridge is not cooling, check the condenser coils at the back of the unit and ensure there is at least 5 cm of clearance behind the fridge. Dirty coils and blocked ventilation are the most common causes of Bosch cooling failures.
Affected Models
- Bosch Serie 2 Fridge-Freezer
- Bosch Serie 4 Fridge-Freezer
- Bosch Serie 6 Fridge-Freezer
- Bosch Serie 8 Fridge-Freezer
- Bosch NoFrost Refrigerator
Common Causes
- Condenser coils clogged with dust — common on under-counter and integrated models
- Insufficient ventilation behind or above the fridge
- Defrost system failure — ice blocking the evaporator on NoFrost models
- Evaporator fan motor failed
- Compressor not starting — relay or capacitor fault
How to Fix It
-
Check clearance and ventilation.
Bosch fridges require at least 5 cm of free space behind the unit and 1 cm above the top. If the fridge is built into a cabinet, ensure the ventilation grilles at the top and bottom of the cabinet are not blocked. Improper ventilation causes the compressor to overheat and reduce cooling.
-
Clean the condenser coils.
Pull the fridge away from the wall. The condenser coils are at the back on most Bosch models. Vacuum off dust and pet hair with a brush attachment. On integrated models the coils may be at the bottom behind the plinth.
-
Check for ice build-up on the evaporator.
Remove items from the freezer and unscrew the rear panel. A heavy layer of ice on the evaporator means the NoFrost defrost cycle has failed. Unplug the fridge and leave all doors open for 24 hours to manually defrost, then restart.
-
Verify temperature settings.
Check the fridge is set to between 3°C and 5°C and the freezer to -18°C. Turn the dial to the correct position or set the correct value on the digital display.
When to Call a Professional
If ventilation is good, the coils are clean, and manually defrosting the evaporator only fixes the issue temporarily, the defrost heater or thermostat has failed and needs professional replacement.
