Freezer Not Freezing
GE Refrigerator
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
A GE freezer that is not freezing is usually caused by dirty condenser coils, a failed evaporator fan, or a defrost system fault with ice build-up on the coils. Clean the condenser coils first, then check the evaporator fan inside the freezer.
Affected Models
- GE Profile French Door Refrigerator
- GE Side-by-Side Refrigerator
- GE Top Mount Refrigerator
- GE Bottom Mount Refrigerator
- GE Cafe Refrigerator
Common Causes
- Dirty condenser coils reducing cooling efficiency
- Evaporator fan motor failed — cold air not circulating
- Defrost system failure — ice blocking evaporator coils
- Door gasket worn — warm air entering the freezer
- Temperature set too warm accidentally
How to Fix It
-
Check the temperature setting.
Confirm the freezer is set to -18°C (0°F). Accidental bumps of the temperature control are common — this is the first thing to rule out.
-
Clean the condenser coils.
Pull the fridge away from the wall and remove the toe grille or back panel to access the condenser coils. Vacuum the coils with a brush attachment. Dusty coils prevent the compressor from shedding heat effectively, raising temperatures in both the freezer and fridge.
-
Check the evaporator fan.
Open the freezer and use a pen or similar object to press the door switch. The evaporator fan should start spinning. If the compressor is running but the fan is not, the fan motor has failed — this is a moderate DIY repair.
-
Inspect the evaporator coils for ice build-up.
Unscrew and remove the rear interior panel inside the freezer. A heavy sheet of ice on the evaporator coils means the defrost heater or thermostat has failed. Manually defrost by leaving the freezer door open for several hours and check if freezing resumes.
-
Check the door gasket.
Inspect the freezer door gasket for tears, cracks, or gaps. Warm air entering through a damaged gasket gradually raises the freezer temperature and can cause partial icing of the evaporator. Replace the gasket if it is not sealing fully.
When to Call a Professional
If manual defrosting restores freezing temporarily but the problem returns within days, the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer has failed and needs professional replacement.
