Ice Maker Not Working
GE Refrigerator
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
On GE fridges, check the ice maker shut-off arm first — if it is raised, ice production is off. Also confirm the freezer is at -18°C (0°F) and the water supply line is connected and turned on.
Affected Models
- GE Profile French Door Refrigerator
- GE Side-by-Side Refrigerator
- GE Cafe Refrigerator
Common Causes
- Shut-off arm raised to the Off position
- Freezer temperature above -12°C (10°F)
- Water supply valve closed or line kinked
- Water filter clogged
- Ice maker module or thermostat failed
How to Fix It
-
Lower the shut-off arm.
Open the freezer and locate the ice maker — it is usually in the upper section of the freezer compartment. If the wire arm on the side is in the raised (up) position, push it down to the horizontal (On) position. The ice maker should begin a cycle within 3 hours.
-
Check freezer temperature.
The GE ice maker requires -12°C (10°F) or below in the freezer. Set the freezer to -18°C (0°F) and wait 24 hours. If the freezer is not reaching this temperature, there may be a cooling issue to address first.
-
Verify the water supply.
Confirm the water supply shut-off valve at the back of the fridge is fully open. Check the plastic water line for kinks. The water pressure must be at least 207 kPa (30 psi) for GE ice makers to fill correctly.
-
Replace the water filter.
Replace the GE SmartWater or XWFE filter if it has not been changed in 6 months. After replacement, press Reset Filter and run 2–3 litres of water through the dispenser to clear the lines.
-
Run a test cycle.
On most GE models, there is a test button on the ice maker module itself (a small button on the front of the module). Press and hold for 3 seconds. If the ice maker fills with water and completes a cycle, the module is working and the issue was likely temperature or water supply related.
