Water Dispenser Not Working
LG Refrigerator
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
If your LG fridge water dispenser is not working, check the child lock first — it disables the dispenser. Also check if the water filter needs replacing and that the water supply valve behind the fridge is open.
Affected Models
- LG French Door Refrigerator
- LG Side-by-Side Refrigerator
- LG InstaView Refrigerator
Common Causes
- Child lock or dispenser lock activated
- Water filter clogged or overdue for replacement
- Water supply shut-off valve behind fridge is closed
- Frozen water line inside the fridge door
- Kinked water supply line
- Failed water inlet valve
How to Fix It
-
Check the dispenser lock.
Look at the control panel for a lock icon. On LG models press and hold the Lock button for 3 seconds to toggle the dispenser lock. This is the most common reason for a suddenly non-functional dispenser.
-
Replace the water filter.
Check when the water filter was last replaced. LG recommends every 6 months. An overdue filter restricts flow to a trickle or stops it entirely. After replacing, flush 2–3 litres through the dispenser to prime the new filter.
-
Check the water supply valve.
Pull the fridge away from the wall and locate the water supply valve on the wall or under the sink. Turn it fully counter-clockwise to ensure it is completely open.
-
Check for a frozen water line.
The water supply line runs through the refrigerator door hinge area and can freeze if the fridge is too cold. Set the fridge temperature up by 1–2°C and check after 2 hours. If the line was frozen, water flow will resume once it thaws.
When to Call a Professional
If the lock is off, the filter is new, the water valve is open, and the line is not frozen, the water inlet valve solenoid has failed and needs replacement by a technician.
