Ice Maker Not Working
Samsung Refrigerator
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Samsung ice maker issues are most commonly caused by the freezer not being cold enough (must be below -12°C / 10°F), a frozen water inlet valve, or the ice maker being accidentally switched off. Check the temperature and confirm the ice maker switch is on.
Affected Models
- Samsung French Door Refrigerator
- Samsung Side-by-Side Refrigerator
- Samsung Bottom Mount Refrigerator
Common Causes
- Freezer temperature above -12°C (10°F) — too warm to make ice
- Ice maker switched off on the control panel
- Water inlet valve frozen or defective
- Water filter clogged — restricts water flow to the ice maker
- Ice clumped in the bin — sensor thinks it is full
How to Fix It
-
Confirm the ice maker is turned on.
On the display panel or inside the freezer, locate the ice maker on/off switch. Some Samsung models switch the ice maker off during self-clean or demo modes. Confirm it is switched to the On position.
-
Check the freezer temperature.
The ice maker requires the freezer to be at or below -12°C (10°F) to produce ice. If the freezer is too warm, ice production stops. Set the freezer to -18°C (0°F) and wait 24 hours for ice production to resume.
-
Remove and inspect the ice bin.
Pull out the ice bin and check if ice has clumped together into one large block. Ice clumps can jam the auger and trigger the full-ice sensor even when no usable cubes remain. Break up or discard the clumped ice and reinsert the bin.
-
Replace the water filter.
A clogged water filter reduces water pressure below the level needed to fill the ice maker mould. Samsung recommends replacing the water filter every 6 months. After replacing, run 2–3 litres of water through the dispenser to purge air from the line.
-
Thaw a frozen inlet valve.
If no water enters the ice maker at all, the water inlet valve behind the fridge may be frozen. Unplug the fridge and leave the freezer door open for 2 hours to allow it to thaw naturally. If the problem recurs, the inlet valve solenoid has likely failed and needs replacement.
