Ice Maker Not Working

Whirlpool Refrigerator

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Check that the ice maker's shut-off arm is in the down (On) position and the freezer is at or below -12°C (10°F). Also check the water supply line and replace the water filter if it has not been changed recently.

Affected Models

  • Whirlpool French Door Refrigerator
  • Whirlpool Side-by-Side Refrigerator
  • Whirlpool Bottom Mount Refrigerator

Common Causes

  • Ice maker shut-off arm in the raised (Off) position
  • Freezer temperature too warm — above -12°C (10°F)
  • Water supply valve closed or water line kinked
  • Water filter clogged — insufficient flow to fill mould
  • Ice clumped in bin — full sensor triggered

How to Fix It

  1. Check the shut-off arm.

Look inside the freezer for the ice maker — there is a wire shut-off arm on the side. If the arm is in the raised position, ice production is disabled. Lower the arm to the down position to enable the ice maker.

  2. Verify freezer temperature.

The Whirlpool ice maker requires the freezer to be -12°C (10°F) or below to function. Set the freezer to -18°C (0°F) for reliable ice production. After a temperature change, allow 24 hours before expecting ice.

  3. Inspect the water supply line.

Pull the fridge away from the wall and check the thin plastic or copper water supply line. Confirm the shut-off valve is fully open. Straighten any kinks — a kinked line provides insufficient pressure to fill the ice mould.

  4. Replace the water filter.

A clogged filter reduces water pressure to the ice maker. Whirlpool recommends replacing the filter every 6 months or after 750 litres (200 gallons). After replacing, run the ice maker through one or two cycles and discard the first batch.

  5. Clear ice clumps from the bin.

Remove the ice bin and break up any large ice clumps. A solid block of ice can jam the auger and activate the shut-off arm prematurely. Empty the bin, clean it, and reinsert.
