Water Dispenser Not Working

Whirlpool Refrigerator

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

If the Whirlpool fridge water dispenser is not working, first press and hold the Control Lock button for 3 seconds to unlock the dispenser. Also check the water supply valve and replace the water filter if it is overdue.

Affected Models

  • Whirlpool French Door Refrigerator
  • Whirlpool Side-by-Side Refrigerator

Common Causes

  • Control Lock active — dispenser buttons unresponsive
  • Water filter clogged — restricts flow
  • Water supply valve closed or line kinked behind the fridge
  • Frozen water line in the door
  • Inlet valve solenoid failed

How to Fix It

  1. Unlock the control panel.

Press and hold the Control Lock button for 3 seconds until the lock icon disappears from the display. When Control Lock is active, all dispenser and panel inputs are ignored.

  2. Replace the water filter.

A clogged filter reduces water pressure and eventually stops the dispenser entirely. Whirlpool recommends replacing the filter every 6 months. After installing a new filter, press and hold the Filter Reset button and dispense 2–3 litres to purge air from the lines.

  3. Check the water supply behind the fridge.

Pull the fridge out and inspect the water supply line. Confirm the saddle valve or shut-off valve is fully open. Check for kinks in the plastic line — straighten carefully.

  4. Thaw a frozen door water line.

If the freezer temperature is set very low, the water line inside the door can freeze. Unplug the fridge and leave the freezer door open for 2 hours. Use a hair dryer on low heat along the bottom edge of the door to speed thawing.

  5. Test the inlet valve.

If water reaches the back of the fridge but does not reach the dispenser, the inlet valve solenoid may have failed. A failed solenoid clicks but does not open. Inlet valve replacement requires pulling the fridge out and accessing the back panel — consider booking a service call.
