Disk is write protected

Commodore Amiga

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Disk is write protected means the floppy disk has its write-protect notch open, physically preventing the drive from writing to it. Slide the small plastic tab on the disk to cover the notch, then retry the operation.

Affected Models

  • Commodore Amiga 500
  • Commodore Amiga 500+
  • Commodore Amiga 600
  • Commodore Amiga 1200
  • WinUAE emulator

Common Causes

  • Write-protect notch on the floppy disk is open (the hole is visible)
  • Commercial software disk — factory write-protected to prevent accidental overwriting
  • On WinUAE: disk image is set to write-protected in drive settings

How to Fix It

  1. Eject the disk and look at the bottom-left corner.

There is a small square notch with a sliding plastic tab. When the hole is open (you can see through it), the disk is write-protected. Slide the tab to cover the hole, then reinsert the disk.

  2. If the disk is a commercial original, do not disable write protection.

Factory disks are write-protected deliberately to prevent accidental data loss. If you need to modify the disk, make a copy first and work with the copy.

  3. On WinUAE: right-click the drive icon and toggle Write Protection off.

In WinUAE, each emulated floppy drive has a write-protect option in the floppy drive settings. Uncheck it to allow writing to the disk image.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to remove write protection from an original Amiga game disk?

It is safe in terms of the hardware, but risky for the disk — you could accidentally overwrite or format it. Always make a backup copy using a tool like ADF-Opus before removing write protection from irreplaceable originals.

Can a write-protected Amiga disk still be read normally?

Yes. Write protection only prevents writing — reading, loading programs, and booting from the disk all work normally regardless of the write-protect state.
