Error 9
Roborock Robot Vacuum
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Roborock Error 9 means the dust bin is either full (and triggering the full-bin sensor) or is not installed correctly. Empty the bin, reinsert it, and the error will clear.
Affected Models
- Roborock S5 Max
- Roborock S6 Pure
- Roborock S7
- Roborock Q5+
- Roborock E5
Common Causes
- Dust bin is full and the sensor has triggered
- Dust bin was removed for emptying and not fully reinserted
- Bin sensor contacts are dirty
- Aftermarket bin dimensions prevent the sensor from triggering correctly
- Filter inside the bin is clogged and blocking airflow
How to Fix It
-
Press the bin release button on the back of the robot and remove the dust bin.
The bin release button is usually at the rear of the robot. Pull the bin straight out.
-
Open the bin, remove the filter, and empty the bin completely over a waste bin. Shake out all debris.
Do not bang the bin hard on the edge of the rubbish bin — this can damage the bin sensor or filter frame.
-
Check and clean the filter. If the filter is visibly grey with accumulated dust, tap it gently over the bin to dislodge dust, or rinse it under cold water (dry completely before reinserting).
A heavily clogged filter reduces suction and can also reduce airflow to the full-bin sensor, causing false 'bin full' readings.
-
Wipe the bin sensor contacts inside the robot (usually 2 small metal pins) with a dry cotton swab.
Dust on these contacts prevents the robot from detecting a correctly inserted bin.
-
Reinsert the bin firmly — push it in until you hear a click, then press CLEAN to restart.
Ensure the filter is correctly seated inside the bin before reinserting. A filter that is not flat inside the bin will prevent full insertion.
When to Call a Professional
Error 9 is a routine maintenance error. If emptying and reinserting the bin does not clear it, clean the bin sensor contacts. Hardware failure causing this error is very rare.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I empty the Roborock dust bin?
Roborock recommends emptying the bin after every 1–3 cleaning sessions depending on home size and floor type. In homes with pets, empty after every session. The bin holds less than it looks like from the outside — do not wait for the error to tell you to empty it.
Can I wash the Roborock dust bin?
Yes — the dust bin can be rinsed with cold or lukewarm water. Do not use hot water or detergents, as these can damage the bin sensor and plastic. Allow the bin to dry completely (at least 24 hours) before reinserting it into the robot.
