Error 1
iRobot Robot Vacuum
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Roomba Error 1 means one of the side drive wheels has detected that it is lifted off the ground or is stuck and cannot move. This happens when the Roomba is on an uneven surface, stuck on a ledge, or has debris jammed in the wheel module.
Affected Models
- Roomba 600 Series
- Roomba 700 Series
- Roomba 800 Series
- Roomba i3
- Roomba i7
Common Causes
- Roomba is on a surface that lifted one wheel off the ground (threshold, rug edge)
- Hair, string, or debris is jammed around the wheel axle
- Roomba drove partially off a step and the wheel is dangling
- Wheel module is dirty and the spring-loaded suspension is stuck
- Wheel module has failed mechanically
How to Fix It
-
Pick up the Roomba and place it on a flat, open area of floor away from rugs, thresholds, and furniture edges.
Error 1 is often triggered by the Roomba getting partially stuck on a rug edge or door threshold, lifting one wheel. Moving it to flat ground often immediately clears the error.
-
Flip the Roomba over and inspect both side drive wheels. Press each wheel in and out several times — they should spring back freely.
The drive wheels are spring-loaded and should compress smoothly. If a wheel feels stiff or does not spring back, debris is jamming the module.
-
Remove any hair, string, or debris wrapped around the wheel axles. Use a pair of scissors to cut tangled hair if needed.
Long hair is the most common cause of a stuck wheel. It wraps around the axle, gradually tightening until the wheel cannot turn or move up and down.
-
Spin each wheel by hand — they should rotate freely in both directions with only light resistance.
If a wheel is very stiff or completely locked, the module may need replacement. iRobot sells replacement wheel modules on their website and Amazon.
-
Press the CLEAN button to restart. If the Roomba starts and runs normally for a minute before triggering the error again, place it in an area with fewer transitions (no rugs, no thresholds) and run it again.
Some older homes have high door thresholds that confuse older Roomba models. Virtual wall barriers can keep the Roomba in flat areas.
When to Call a Professional
If the wheel spins freely when you rotate it by hand with no debris present, but the error persists, the wheel module sensor may have failed. Contact iRobot support at irobot.com/support for warranty service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Roomba Error 1 keep happening even on flat floors?
If Error 1 keeps triggering on a flat floor with no debris, the wheel module sensor itself may be faulty. The sensor detects wheel position using a small contact or magnetic switch. If this switch is dirty or broken, it sends a false 'wheel lifted' signal. Cleaning around the wheel module with a dry cloth sometimes clears a dirty switch.
How many beeps is Roomba Error 1?
Roomba Error 1 is announced by 1 beep followed by the voice saying 'Error 1' (on newer models) or a single beep tone (on older 600/700 series). On the iRobot Home app, the error name will display as 'Side wheel stuck' or 'Move Roomba to a new location and press CLEAN.'
