Error 11

iRobot Robot Vacuum

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Roomba Error 11 is a battery fault — the robot cannot charge or run properly because the battery is deeply discharged, faulty, or at end of life. A deep charge cycle or a battery replacement usually fixes it.

Affected Models

  • Roomba 600 Series
  • Roomba 700 Series
  • Roomba 800 Series
  • Roomba e5
  • Roomba 960

Common Causes

  • Battery is deeply discharged and cannot accept a normal charge
  • Battery has reached end of life after 2–4 years of use
  • Charging contacts on the Roomba or Home Base are dirty
  • Battery was stored for a long time and has developed a memory effect
  • Battery cells have failed — one or more cells no longer hold charge

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the charging contacts on the bottom of the Roomba (two large metal discs) and on the Home Base dock using a dry cloth or a slightly damp cloth.

Dirty charging contacts are the easiest and most overlooked fix. A thin film of dust on the contacts can prevent any charge from transferring.

  2. Place the Roomba on the Home Base dock and leave it for at least 2 full hours without disturbing it. Do not press any buttons.

A very deeply discharged battery needs a slow trickle charge before the robot will show any charging indicator. 2 hours of uninterrupted charging often brings a dead battery back to life.

  3. If the robot still will not charge on the dock, try charging it directly with the included power adapter (plug directly into Roomba, not via the dock).

Direct charging bypasses the dock contacts and confirms whether the issue is with the dock or the battery. If direct charging works, the problem is the dock — clean the dock contacts more thoroughly.

  4. Remove the battery from the Roomba (flip over, remove the bottom cover, unplug the battery connector), wait 5 minutes, reinsert, and try charging again.

Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery can reset the battery management circuit that sometimes gets into a fault state after a deep discharge.

  5. If the battery is over 2 years old, replace it. Search for your Roomba model number + 'replacement battery' on Amazon. Order an iRobot OEM battery or a reputable aftermarket brand.

Battery replacement takes about 5 minutes. No special tools are needed — just a Phillips screwdriver to remove the bottom cover.

When to Call a Professional

If the battery is over 2 years old, replacement is the correct solution. Roomba replacement batteries cost $20–$40 from iRobot and Amazon. If the robot is under warranty and the battery is less than 1 year old, contact iRobot support.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Roomba battery last?

A Roomba battery typically lasts 2–4 years or 400–600 charge cycles under normal use. If you run your Roomba daily, the battery will wear out faster than if you run it a few times per week. Signs of a dying battery: shorter run time, robot returning to dock more often, robot not completing a full clean.

Can I use a third-party battery in my Roomba?

Yes. Many aftermarket batteries are available for Roomba and most work well. Look for batteries that state compatibility with your specific Roomba model and have at least 2000mAh capacity. Avoid the cheapest no-name options — a poor-quality lithium battery can be a safety risk.
