Error 14
iRobot Robot Vacuum
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Roomba Error 14 means the dustbin is installed but not seated correctly — it has not clicked fully into place and the sensor is not making proper contact. Remove the bin, check for debris in the slot, and reinsert firmly.
Affected Models
- Roomba i3
- Roomba i7
- Roomba j7
- Roomba s9
- Roomba 980
Common Causes
- Bin is not pushed all the way in — sensor contact not made
- Debris inside the bin slot is blocking full insertion
- Bin latch is worn and no longer clicks securely
- Bin filter is incorrectly installed and is preventing full closure
- Bin is cracked or deformed and cannot seat properly
How to Fix It
-
Remove the dustbin completely by pressing the release button and pulling it straight out.
The release button is usually on the back of the Roomba. Pull the bin out with a firm, straight pull.
-
Inspect the bin slot on the Roomba. Use a torch to look for any debris, stuck filter fragments, or accumulated dust blocking the sensor contacts.
Vacuum the bin slot gently if needed — the small contact pins at the back of the slot must be completely clear.
-
Check the bin filter is lying flat inside the bin. Remove and reseat the filter if it has shifted.
A tilted or crumpled filter physically prevents the bin from inserting fully. Open the bin, lay the filter flat, close it, and try reinserting.
-
Reinsert the bin with firm, steady pressure until you hear and feel the click of the latch engaging.
Do not try to slide the bin in at an angle — align it straight with the slot and push directly inward.
-
Press CLEAN. If Error 14 appears again, retry the insertion a second time with extra force on the last centimetre of travel.
Some Roomba models have a stiff bin latch that needs deliberate pressure to click fully. If it feels like it is 'almost in', it is not in — push harder.
When to Call a Professional
Error 14 is a DIY fix. If the bin seats correctly but the error persists, the sensor may be faulty — contact iRobot support.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if the Roomba bin is fully inserted?
The bin is fully inserted when you can hear and feel a definite click from the latch mechanism. If the bin just slides in softly with no click, it is not fully seated. On i-series and j-series Roombas, there is also an indicator on the app — the bin status icon shows green when detected correctly.
My Roomba bin is cracked — can I still use it?
A cracked bin will not seat correctly and the crack may allow dust to escape inside the robot, damaging the motor filter. Replace a cracked bin as soon as possible. Genuine iRobot replacement bins are available from irobot.com and Amazon for $20–$35.
