Error 2

iRobot Robot Vacuum

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Roomba Error 2 means the small front caster wheel (the little swivel wheel at the front) is clogged with hair or debris and cannot roll freely. Removing the caster wheel and pulling out the debris fixes this in about 2 minutes.

Affected Models

  • Roomba 600 Series
  • Roomba 700 Series
  • Roomba 800 Series
  • Roomba e5
  • Roomba i3

Common Causes

  • Hair or thread wrapped tightly around the caster wheel axle
  • Sticky debris (food, pet hair matted with moisture) clogging the caster housing
  • Caster wheel housing is cracked and the wheel is binding
  • Hard debris (pebble, small toy part) wedged in the caster housing

How to Fix It

  1. Flip the Roomba upside down. Locate the small front caster wheel — it is the single swivel wheel at the front of the machine.

The caster wheel is distinctly smaller than the two main drive wheels. It swivels in all directions and lets the Roomba turn smoothly.

  2. Pull the caster wheel module straight out — it usually pops out with firm finger pressure, no tools needed.

On most Roomba models the caster wheel pulls out as a single unit. If it feels stuck, wiggle it gently while pulling.

  3. Remove the wheel from the housing and pull out all hair and debris from the axle and the inside of the housing.

Use your fingers or a small pick to pull hair from around the axle. The amount of hair that accumulates here is often surprising — clear it all.

  4. Rinse the caster wheel and housing under running water if needed, then dry completely before reinserting.

Do not reinsert a wet caster module — moisture in the housing can create friction and cause the same error again quickly.

  5. Push the caster module firmly back into its socket until it clicks, then flip the Roomba over and press CLEAN to restart.

Ensure the caster wheel module is fully seated — a partially inserted module will cause the wheel to bind.

When to Call a Professional

Error 2 is a maintenance issue — no service needed unless the caster wheel housing is cracked, in which case a replacement caster wheel module is available from iRobot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean the Roomba caster wheel?

iRobot recommends cleaning the caster wheel every 2 weeks under normal use. If you have pets or long-haired household members, clean it weekly — pet hair and long human hair will clog the caster much faster. A few minutes of maintenance prevents hours of troubleshooting.

Can I replace just the caster wheel or do I need the whole module?

You can usually replace the entire caster wheel module as a single unit — iRobot sells these for about $10–$15. Replacing just the wheel rubber is also possible if the housing is intact, but the full module replacement is easier and more reliable.
