Error 5
iRobot Robot Vacuum
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Roomba Error 5 indicates a left or right main drive wheel is stalled or has a motor fault. The most common cause is debris (especially hair) jammed so deeply in the wheel module that the motor has stalled. Cleaning the wheel module almost always fixes it.
Affected Models
- Roomba 600 Series
- Roomba 700 Series
- Roomba 800 Series
- Roomba i3
- Roomba i7 Plus
Common Causes
- Hair or string jammed so deeply in the wheel axle that the motor has stalled
- Wheel module has a mechanical blockage (pebble, hard debris)
- Wheel motor has burned out from prolonged stalling
- Wheel module internal gears are stripped from repeated stalling
- Roomba got stuck and the wheel motor ran against a wall for too long
How to Fix It
-
Flip the Roomba over and identify which wheel is causing the error. The app will usually specify 'left wheel' or 'right wheel' (or 5 beeps = right, check your manual).
Knowing which wheel is affected lets you focus your cleaning efforts.
-
Press the affected wheel in and out firmly several times. It should compress and spring back smoothly. If it does not move at all, the module is fully jammed.
A wheel that has no spring action at all usually has debris packed so tightly that it has seized the suspension mechanism.
-
Remove visible hair from around the wheel axle. For deeply embedded hair, use scissors to cut through the mass, then pull it out in pieces.
Do not try to pull matted hair out in one piece — it is more likely to tear the rubber wheel. Cut it first.
-
If hair is packed deep into the axle, use a small flathead screwdriver to pry out the side cover of the wheel module, allowing better access to the axle.
On some Roomba models the wheel module has a removable cover secured by a single screw. Refer to an iRobot support video for your specific model if unsure.
-
After cleaning, spin the wheel by hand. It should rotate with only light resistance. Press CLEAN and let the Roomba run — if it moves in straight lines, the problem is resolved.
A partially cleaned wheel may still trigger Error 5 because the motor is still strained. Be thorough.
When to Call a Professional
If the wheel motor is burned out or gears are stripped, the wheel module needs replacement. iRobot sells replacement wheel modules. If the robot is under warranty, contact iRobot support at irobot.com/support.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a replacement Roomba wheel module cost?
Replacement wheel modules for Roomba typically cost $15–$30 on Amazon or the iRobot website, depending on your model. They are straightforward to install — you remove 2–3 screws, swap the module, and resecure. For a robot vacuum that cost $300+, a $20 wheel module is a very cost-effective repair.
Will Roomba Error 5 damage the motor if I keep running it?
Yes. If the wheel motor is stalling against a blockage and you keep pressing CLEAN, you are burning out the motor windings. Each failed run shortens the motor's life. Fix the mechanical blockage first, then run the robot.
