Error 6
iRobot Robot Vacuum
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Roomba Error 6 means the front bumper is stuck in the pressed position — the robot thinks it is permanently in contact with an obstacle. Tapping the bumper sharply or cleaning around it almost always frees it.
Affected Models
- Roomba 600 Series
- Roomba 700 Series
- Roomba 800 Series
- Roomba e5
- Roomba i3
Common Causes
- Debris or dirt trapped around the bumper edge is holding it in the 'pressed' position
- Bumper was hit hard and the sensor inside shifted slightly
- Carpet fiber or pet hair is wedged between the bumper and the main body
- Bumper sensor (infrared emitter/receiver) is dirty
- Bumper is cracked or warped and no longer seats correctly
How to Fix It
-
Tap the front bumper firmly with your hand several times, all the way around its surface.
The bumper is spring-loaded. A sharp tap often dislodges debris that is holding it in the compressed position. This is the quickest fix and works about 50% of the time.
-
Inspect the gap between the bumper and the main body all the way around. Use a torch to look for trapped debris.
The bumper is designed to compress when it hits something and spring back when the obstacle is removed. Any debris in the gap prevents it from springing back.
-
Use a can of compressed air (the kind used for cleaning keyboards) to blow debris out of the bumper gap.
Compressed air reaches into the narrow gap much more effectively than a cloth or brush. Blow around the entire perimeter of the bumper.
-
Wipe the bumper sensors: on the front of the Roomba (inside the bumper area when compressed), there are small infrared sensor windows. Wipe them with a dry cloth.
Dirty sensor windows cause false readings that make the machine think the bumper is always pressed.
-
Press CLEAN to restart. Place the Roomba in an open area to give it room to run its startup self-check without immediately hitting an obstacle.
If Error 6 only triggers when the Roomba hits certain obstacles (like a specific piece of furniture), that furniture may have a sharp corner that is catching the bumper edge.
When to Call a Professional
If the bumper visibly has a gap or crack, or the bumper sensor is damaged, contact iRobot support. The bumper assembly can be replaced but it requires partial disassembly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Roomba bumper be straightened if bent?
Plastic bumpers that are slightly warped from heat (e.g., left on a sunny floor) can sometimes be gently pushed back into shape. However, if the bumper is cracked, replacement is the proper fix. Replacement Roomba bumper assemblies cost $15–$30 and are available on Amazon.
Why does Error 6 happen more often in summer?
Heat from sunlight can cause the plastic bumper to expand slightly, making it fit more tightly against the body and increasing the chance of it sticking. Leaving the Roomba in a cooler, shaded spot and ensuring the bumper gap is clean usually solves seasonal bumper sticking.
