Error 8
iRobot Robot Vacuum
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Roomba Error 8 means the robot cannot detect that the dustbin is installed. The bin sensor contacts are dirty, or the bin is not fully seated. Cleaning the contacts and firmly reinserting the bin fixes this almost every time.
Affected Models
- Roomba 600 Series
- Roomba 700 Series
- Roomba 800 Series
- Roomba i3
- Roomba i7
Common Causes
- Dustbin is not fully inserted and not making contact with the sensor
- Bin sensor contacts (small metal pins inside the bin slot) are dirty with dust
- Dustbin is cracked and the sensor trigger is not being activated
- Sensor inside the Roomba body has failed
- Bin was replaced with an aftermarket bin that does not trigger the sensor correctly
How to Fix It
-
Remove the dustbin and reinsert it firmly — push it in until you feel and hear it click into place.
The bin must be fully seated for the sensor contacts to connect. A half-inserted bin looks installed but does not trigger the sensor.
-
Inspect the inside of the bin slot on the Roomba. Look for two small metal contact pins. Wipe them with a dry cotton swab to remove dust and debris.
These pins make electrical contact with matching contacts on the bin. Even a thin layer of fine dust can break the circuit.
-
Inspect the matching contacts on the dustbin itself — the two small metal pads or pins on the bin that connect with the Roomba's contacts. Clean them with a dry cotton swab as well.
Both sides of the contact need to be clean for the circuit to complete. Cleaning only one side sometimes is not enough.
-
Empty the bin completely and make sure the bin filter is seated correctly. An overstuffed or improperly loaded filter can push against the bin housing and prevent full insertion.
The filter must lie flat inside the bin. If it is folded or jammed in at an angle, the bin lid will not close properly and the bin will not seat fully.
-
If you have been using an aftermarket bin, try the original iRobot bin. Non-OEM bins sometimes have slightly different dimensions that prevent the sensor from triggering.
After testing with the original bin, if it works, the aftermarket bin has a fitting issue. Contact the seller for a replacement or switch back to the original.
When to Call a Professional
If cleaning the contacts and using the original bin does not clear Error 8, the sensor inside the Roomba body may need replacement. Contact iRobot support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run a Roomba without the dustbin installed?
No. The Roomba will refuse to start if the bin is not detected. This safety check prevents debris from being blown around the room instead of collected. Always ensure the bin is fully inserted and the sensor is reading it before pressing CLEAN.
What is the difference between Error 8 and Error 14 on Roomba?
Error 8 (8 beeps) typically means the bin is not detected at all — the sensor sees no bin present. Error 14 means the bin was detected but needs to be reseated — a slight misalignment. The fix is the same for both: remove and firmly reinsert the bin.
