Mapping Issues

iRobot Robot Vacuum

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Roomba mapping problems are usually caused by the robot being picked up and moved, the dock being repositioned, or the robot running in poor lighting. Allowing the robot to complete 3–5 full, undisturbed cleaning sessions usually builds a stable and accurate map.

Affected Models

  • Roomba i7
  • Roomba i7+
  • Roomba j7
  • Roomba j7+
  • Roomba s9+

Common Causes

  • Roomba was picked up and moved during a cleaning session
  • Home Base dock was moved from its original position
  • Room lighting changed significantly during mapping runs
  • Robot kept getting stuck before completing a full clean
  • Keep Out Zones or other app settings are confusing the robot
  • Furniture was rearranged and the robot cannot reconcile the old and new maps

How to Fix It

  1. Do not pick up or move the Roomba while it is cleaning. If you need to stop it, press CLEAN to pause and let it return to the dock on its own.

Picking up the robot and placing it in a different spot completely disorients it. It has no GPS — it tracks its position by counting wheel rotations and camera landmarks.

  2. Keep the Home Base in the same position. The dock is the robot's fixed reference point — its 'home origin' for all mapping. Moving the dock forces a full map rebuild.

If you need to move the dock, delete the existing map in the iRobot Home app and let the robot build a fresh one from the new dock location.

  3. Run the Roomba for 3–5 complete, undisturbed cleans. Each run adds detail to the map. Incomplete runs produce an inaccurate or partial map.

The first clean is always the roughest. By the third or fourth complete clean, the map should be very close to the actual room layout.

  4. In the iRobot Home app, check for inaccurate Keep Out Zones or room divisions. Delete any that are misplaced and redraw them.

Incorrectly placed Keep Out Zones can cause the robot to avoid areas it should clean, making the map look wrong in the app.

  5. If the map is severely wrong or outdated (e.g., after major renovation), delete it in the app and start fresh: Settings > Maps > Delete Map.

Starting fresh is sometimes the fastest path to an accurate map. After deleting, allow 3–5 undisturbed complete cleans to build the new map.

When to Call a Professional

Mapping issues are almost never a hardware problem. If the app reports a system fault related to mapping, contact iRobot support.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rooms can Roomba map?

Roomba i-series and j-series can map up to 10 floor plans and divide each floor into up to 10 named rooms. For most homes this is more than sufficient. The s9+ can handle larger and more complex homes, covering up to 4,000 square feet per map.

Does Roomba mapping work in the dark?

No. Roomba's camera-based navigation requires ambient light to work. If you schedule a clean to run at night, ensure a light is left on in each room the robot needs to clean. Alternatively, run the Roomba during daylight hours.
