Not Cleaning Edges

iRobot Roomba Robot Vacuum

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

A Roomba that misses edges and corners almost always has a worn or stopped side brush. The side brush sweeps debris from edges into the Roomba's path — without it, edges are skipped entirely. Clean or replace the side brush.

Affected Models

  • iRobot Roomba 600 series
  • iRobot Roomba 700 series
  • iRobot Roomba e5
  • iRobot Roomba i3
  • iRobot Roomba i7
  • iRobot Roomba j7

Common Causes

  • Side brush not spinning due to hair tangle or motor fault
  • Side brush worn down and no longer reaching the floor
  • Edge sensors dirty — causing Roomba to stay too far from walls
  • Wall-following sensor dirty or blocked with dust
  • Cleaning mode set to avoid edges

How to Fix It

  1. Remove and inspect the side brush — clean any hair from the spindle and replace if worn.

The side brush does all edge and corner work. If it is tangled, worn, or not spinning, edges will not be cleaned. Replace every 6 months.

  2. Wipe the wall-following sensor on the right side of the Roomba with a dry cloth.

The infrared sensor on the right side guides Roomba along walls. A dusty sensor causes Roomba to navigate too far from the wall and miss the edge zone.

  3. Run the Roomba in Edge Cleaning mode if your model supports it.

Some Roomba models have a dedicated edge cleaning mode that makes additional passes along walls. Check your model's app or manual for this feature.

  4. Clean the cliff sensors on the bottom of the unit.

Dirty cliff sensors can cause Roomba to stay away from walls near drop-offs or darker surfaces, leaving a gap along the edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Roomba clean right into corners?

No — Roomba is round and physically cannot reach into 90-degree corners. The side brush sweeps debris from corners into the cleaning path, but a small triangle of debris will always remain. For corners, a quick hand vacuum pass is needed.

My Roomba cleans the middle of the room but always misses a strip along the walls — why?

This is almost always the wall-following sensor being dirty. Wipe the right-side sensor panel with a dry cloth. Also check that the side brush is spinning and its arms are not too worn to reach the floor.
