Not Connecting to Wi-Fi
iRobot Robot Vacuum
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Roomba only supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks. If your router broadcasts only 5 GHz, or your password has special characters that were mis-entered, setup will fail. Switching to 2.4 GHz and re-entering the password fixes most setup failures.
Affected Models
- Roomba i3
- Roomba i7
- Roomba j7
- Roomba s9
- Roomba 980
Common Causes
- Router is broadcasting on 5 GHz only — Roomba requires 2.4 GHz
- Wi-Fi password was entered incorrectly
- Router changed (new router, new password, new network name)
- Roomba is too far from the router during initial setup
- Phone Bluetooth is off — the app uses Bluetooth to send Wi-Fi credentials to the robot
- App permissions for Bluetooth and Location are not granted
How to Fix It
-
Enable Bluetooth on your phone. The iRobot Home app uses Bluetooth to send the Wi-Fi credentials to the Roomba during setup.
This surprises many people — the app does not use Wi-Fi to set up the robot. It uses Bluetooth first, then teaches the robot the Wi-Fi credentials.
-
Ensure your phone is connected to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network (not 5 GHz) before starting the setup in the app.
Roomba only supports 2.4 GHz. If your phone is on the 5 GHz band, the robot will be sent credentials for a network it cannot use.
-
Keep the Roomba, phone, and router within 3 metres of each other during the setup process.
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signal strength both matter during initial setup. Weak signals cause the credential transfer or the initial connection handshake to time out.
-
In your phone's app settings, verify that the iRobot app has Bluetooth and Location permissions set to Allow.
On Android, Bluetooth device scanning requires Location permission to be granted. Without this, the app cannot find or communicate with the robot.
-
If setup still fails, delete the robot from the app, factory reset the Roomba (hold the CLEAN button for 10 seconds until it beeps), and start the setup from scratch.
A factory reset clears any previous partial Wi-Fi configuration that could be interfering with the new setup attempt.
When to Call a Professional
Wi-Fi setup issues are almost never hardware faults. If the robot cannot connect after all steps, contact iRobot support at irobot.com/support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Wi-Fi to use my Roomba?
No. All Roomba models work perfectly without Wi-Fi — just press the CLEAN button on the robot. Wi-Fi connectivity adds the app control, scheduling, mapping, and voice assistant features. If you only want to start and stop cleaning manually, Wi-Fi is completely optional.
My router changed — how do I reconnect my Roomba to the new Wi-Fi?
Open the iRobot Home app, go to Settings > Wi-Fi Settings, and follow the steps to connect to a new network. You will need to put the robot in Bluetooth pairing mode (hold the Home and Spot buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds on most models) so the app can send the new credentials. Your saved maps are not affected by a Wi-Fi change.
