Not Docking

iRobot Robot Vacuum

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Roomba that cannot find its Home Base is usually caused by the dock being moved, the dock's IR beacon being blocked, or the dock being placed in a location that makes it hard for the robot to approach.

Affected Models

  • Roomba 600 Series
  • Roomba 800 Series
  • Roomba i3
  • Roomba i7
  • Roomba j7

Common Causes

  • Home Base was moved from its original position during cleaning
  • Object placed in front of the dock is blocking the IR homing beam
  • Dock is placed in a corner or alcove — Roomba cannot approach from the correct angle
  • IR home beacon is dirty or covered
  • Roomba's dock-finding sensors are dirty
  • Battery was too low for the robot to complete its return journey

How to Fix It

  1. Ensure the Home Base is placed against a wall with at least 0.5m of clear space on each side and 1.5m of clear space in front.

The Roomba approaches its dock from the front in a straight line. If furniture is within 0.5m of the sides, the robot cannot straighten up for the final approach.

  2. Do not place the Home Base in a corner, under a table, or in a recess. It needs open access on three sides.

A dock in a tight space forces the robot to approach at an angle it cannot correct, causing it to miss the contacts repeatedly.

  3. Clean the Home Base IR beacon window (the small dark strip on the front of the dock) with a dry cloth.

The IR beacon is how the Roomba finds the dock from across the room. A dusty beacon significantly shortens its effective range.

  4. Clean the IR home sensors on the front of the Roomba (small windows near the bumper) with a dry cloth.

Dirty home sensors reduce the robot's ability to detect the dock signal.

  5. If the Roomba finishes cleaning with very low battery before reaching the dock, it may not have enough charge to complete the return journey. Try scheduling shorter cleaning sessions or enabling the recharge-and-resume feature.

If the battery is old and run time is short, the robot may consistently run out of power before docking. A battery replacement will solve this.

When to Call a Professional

Docking failure is almost always a placement or cleaning issue. If the robot repeatedly fails to dock even with ideal placement and clean sensors, contact iRobot support.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Roomba finds the dock but keeps bumping it and not connecting — why?

If the robot touches the dock repeatedly but never makes contact, the charging contacts on the robot or dock are likely misaligned or dirty. Clean the contacts on both the robot and the dock. Also check that the dock is on a level surface — a tilted dock causes the robot to miss the contacts even with correct approach.

Will Roomba try to dock automatically when it is low on battery?

Yes. When the Roomba detects its battery is low during a clean, it automatically stops cleaning and attempts to return to the dock to recharge. On smart models (i-series, j-series, s-series), it can recharge and then resume cleaning where it left off.
