Motion Not Detecting
TP-Link Tapo Security Camera
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Tapo cameras may miss motion if sensitivity is set too low, activity zones exclude the area, or notifications are disabled. Increase sensitivity, check zones, and verify notification settings in the Tapo app.
Affected Models
- Tapo C100
- Tapo C200
- Tapo C210
- Tapo C310
- Tapo C320WS
- Tapo C420S2
- Tapo C520WS
Common Causes
- Motion detection sensitivity set too low
- Activity zones excluding the motion area
- Privacy mode enabled (camera not actively monitoring)
- Notification permissions disabled on the phone
- Camera firmware bug fixed in newer release
How to Fix It
-
Check that motion detection is enabled.
Open the Tapo app, select your camera, and go to Settings > Motion Detection. Verify it is turned on. Some users accidentally disable it when setting up notifications.
-
Increase sensitivity.
Set the sensitivity slider to High in the motion detection settings. Low sensitivity can miss subtle motion — particularly people who move slowly or are far from the camera.
-
Verify Activity Zones.
If you have set Activity Zones (only detect motion in specified rectangles), make sure your area of interest is included. Areas outside the zones are completely ignored. Try removing all zones temporarily to test.
-
Disable Privacy Mode.
If Privacy Mode is on, the camera does not monitor at all. Check Settings > Privacy Mode and ensure it is off when you want detection.
-
Check notification permissions.
Phone Settings > Apps > Tapo > Notifications. Grant Tapo permission to send notifications. Even if the camera detects motion correctly, you will not see alerts without notification permission.
When to Call a Professional
Most motion detection issues are settings-related. Tapo support can help if the camera does not detect motion even with sensitivity at maximum and zones disabled.
