Foot Pedal Not Responding / Full Speed
Brother Sewing Machine
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A Brother foot pedal that does not respond is usually due to a loose or damaged cable connection at the machine or the pedal itself. Check both ends of the cable, try pressing and releasing the pedal fully, and confirm the machine is not in Start/Stop button mode which overrides the pedal.
Affected Models
- Brother SE700
- Brother CS7000X
- Brother HC1850
- Brother XR9550
- All Brother machines with a detachable foot pedal
Common Causes
- Foot pedal cable not fully plugged into the machine socket
- Cable damaged — cracked insulation or broken wire near the connector
- Worn internal rheostat — pedal reads full speed or no speed regardless of position
- Machine set to Start/Stop button mode — pedal is disabled in this mode
- Foot pedal contact plate corroded or dirty, causing intermittent response
How to Fix It
-
Check both ends of the pedal cable.
Unplug the foot pedal cable from the machine and reinsert it firmly — it should click or seat fully into the port. Also check where the cable enters the pedal housing for damage or a loose connection. A partially inserted cable causes intermittent or no response.
-
Check whether the machine is in Start/Stop mode.
Many computerised Brother machines have a Start/Stop button on the machine body. When this mode is active, the foot pedal is disabled and the machine is controlled by the Start/Stop button only. Deactivate this mode in the machine settings or by pressing the Start/Stop button again.
-
Test with gentle, full pedal travel.
Press the pedal from completely unpressed to fully depressed and release slowly. If the machine responds at some positions but not others, the rheostat is wearing out. If the machine does not respond at all, the cable or connection is the issue.
-
Inspect the cable for damage.
Examine the full length of the pedal cable for cuts, kinks, or areas where the outer insulation is cracked. Damage usually occurs near the connector or at the pedal entry point where the cable bends repeatedly. A damaged cable requires pedal replacement — do not attempt to splice pedal cables.
-
Clean the contact plate inside the pedal.
Open the pedal housing by removing the screws on the underside. Inside, the rheostat or carbon contact plate may be coated with carbon dust from wear. Clean gently with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Note: this is a temporary fix — a worn rheostat will need full replacement eventually.
When to Call a Professional
If the cable is intact and properly connected, but the machine runs at full speed regardless of pedal pressure, the pedal rheostat (speed controller) has failed and the pedal unit needs replacement.
