Needle Not Moving

Brother Sewing Machine

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

If the needle will not move, the bobbin winder may be engaged, the machine may be locked up from a thread jam, or the hand wheel clutch is disengaged. Push the bobbin winder spindle back to the left and check for jams.

Affected Models

  • Brother CS7000X
  • Brother SE600
  • Brother SE1900
  • Brother XR9550
  • Most Brother machines

Common Causes

  • Bobbin winder spindle still in the winding position
  • Thread jam locking the mechanism
  • Hand wheel inner clutch disengaged (on some models)
  • Broken drive belt
  • Motor failure

How to Fix It

  1. Push the bobbin winder spindle back to the left.

When the spindle is in winding position, the needle is disengaged. Push it left to re-engage the needle.

  2. Check for a thread jam in the bobbin area.

Open the bobbin cover and remove any tangled thread. A severe jam can lock the entire mechanism.

  3. Try turning the hand wheel manually toward you.

If it will not turn, the mechanism is jammed. Remove the needle plate and bobbin case to access the jam.

  4. If the hand wheel turns freely but the needle does not move: the drive belt may be broken.

A broken belt requires professional repair or replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix a broken drive belt myself?

It is possible but requires opening the machine casing. Replacement belts cost $5-$10. YouTube has model-specific guides.

Why does the hand wheel only turn one direction?

Always turn the hand wheel toward you (counterclockwise when viewed from the right). Turning it the wrong way can cause thread jams and timing issues.
