Presser Foot Not Lowering
Brother Sewing Machine
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A Brother presser foot that does not lower is usually caused by an incorrectly attached foot, a lever that is not fully pushed down, or thread caught in the presser foot mechanism. Remove and reattach the presser foot correctly, clear any thread tangles, and ensure the presser foot lever moves freely.
Affected Models
- Brother SE700
- Brother CS7000X
- Brother HC1850
- Brother CP60X
- Brother XR9550
- All Brother sewing machines with a presser foot lever
Common Causes
- Presser foot not attached correctly — shank not fully clicked into place
- Thread or fabric caught behind the presser foot or in the lever mechanism
- Presser foot lever bent or obstructed by a nearby attachment
- Incorrect presser foot type for the current stitch mode
- Machine in an error state — restart required
How to Fix It
-
Remove and reattach the presser foot.
Lift the presser foot lever to the highest position. Press the presser foot release button (usually on the back of the foot holder) and remove the foot. Reattach the correct foot by positioning it under the holder and pressing down until it clicks. Ensure the pin on the holder aligns with the notch on the presser foot.
-
Clear thread from the mechanism.
Cut all thread and remove the fabric from the machine. Look around the presser foot area and behind the needle plate for thread caught in the lowering mechanism. Even a single thread loop caught around the foot shank can physically prevent the foot from lowering.
-
Check the presser foot lever path.
On some Brother models, accessories or attachments placed too close to the machine can obstruct the downward travel of the presser foot lever. Remove all attachments and try lowering the foot lever with nothing near the back of the machine.
-
Turn the machine off and on.
Some Brother computerised models lock the presser foot position during error states. Turn the machine off at the power switch, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on. The presser foot should reset to a functional state on restart.
-
Confirm the correct foot is installed.
Some specialty presser feet (embroidery feet, walking feet) are physically taller and can appear not fully lowered when attached. Compare the installed foot height to the standard zigzag foot (foot J or similar). If they differ, the specialty foot may be correct and the appearance of being raised is normal.
When to Call a Professional
If the presser foot lever feels hard or gritty and the foot still does not lower after clearing obstructions, the lever mechanism may need lubrication or adjustment by a Brother-authorised technician.
