Thread Tension Too Loose

Brother Sewing Machine

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Thread tension too loose on a Brother machine causes loops of upper thread to show on the underside of the fabric. The most common cause is threading the machine with the presser foot down, which prevents the thread from entering the tension discs. Re-thread with the presser foot raised — this alone fixes most tension problems.

Affected Models

  • Brother CS7000X
  • Brother SE1900
  • Brother XR9550
  • Brother CP60X
  • Most Brother models

Common Causes

  • Upper thread threaded with presser foot lowered (bypasses tension discs)
  • Thread slipped out of a tension guide
  • Tension dial set too low for the fabric
  • Bobbin tension too tight pulling upper thread through
  • Lint in the tension mechanism

How to Fix It

  1. Raise the presser foot and re-thread the upper thread from scratch.

The tension discs only grip the thread when the presser foot lever is up. Remove all thread from the machine, raise the presser foot, and re-thread following the numbered path on the machine.

  2. Ensure the thread passes through the take-up lever.

The take-up lever is the moving arm near the top of the machine. The thread must pass through its hook. Missing this guide is the most common cause of loose upper tension.

  3. Increase the tension dial by 1–2 numbers.

The standard tension setting is 4 on most Brother machines. If loops appear on the underside of the fabric, increase to 5 or 6. Test on a scrap of the same fabric before sewing the project.

  4. Re-thread the bobbin and check its direction.

On most Brother drop-in bobbin models, the bobbin thread should unwind counter-clockwise when viewed from above. An incorrectly inserted bobbin makes the tension appear loose even when the upper thread is correct.

  5. Clean lint from the tension area.

Thread a piece of thread through the tension path and pull it back and forth to dislodge any lint. Lint prevents the tension discs from gripping the thread properly.

When to Call a Professional

If tension is consistently loose even after correct threading and cleaning, the tension spring may be worn. Contact Brother support or a local sewing machine dealer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tension setting should my Brother machine be on?

Most Brother machines default to tension setting 4, which is correct for medium-weight cotton and woven fabrics. For lightweight fabrics try 3–3.5, and for heavier fabrics try 4.5–5. Always test on a fabric scrap first.

Why does my Brother machine have loops on the bottom only?

Loops on the bottom of the fabric mean the upper thread tension is too loose. Re-thread the upper thread with the presser foot raised. If loops persist, increase the tension number by 1 and test again.
