Upper Thread Breaking

Brother Sewing Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Upper thread breaking repeatedly is caused by incorrect threading, a damaged needle, tension too tight, or a burr on the needle plate. Rethread the machine with the presser foot UP and replace the needle.

Affected Models

  • Brother CS7000X
  • Brother SE600
  • Brother SE1900
  • Brother XR9550
  • Most Brother machines

Common Causes

  • Needle damaged, bent, or wrong size for the thread
  • Thread caught on a burr on the needle plate or hook
  • Upper tension too tight
  • Thread not seated properly in the tension discs
  • Poor quality thread fraying and snapping
  • Thread spool catching on the spool pin

How to Fix It

  1. Replace the needle with a new one — correct size for the thread.

A damaged needle is the #1 cause. Use size 11/75 for lightweight fabric, 14/90 for medium, 16/100 for heavy.

  2. Rethread completely with the presser foot UP.

Remove all thread, raise the presser foot (opens tension discs), and rethread from scratch.

  3. Check the needle plate for burrs.

Run your fingernail over the needle plate hole. If you feel a rough spot, gently smooth it with fine emery cloth.

  4. Reduce upper tension.

If tension is above 5, try reducing to 4. Too-tight tension snaps the thread.

  5. Use quality thread.

Cheap thread has weak spots and fuzz that catches on the machine. Gutermann, Coats & Clark, and Aurifil are reliable brands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does thread quality really matter?

Yes, significantly. Cheap thread has inconsistent thickness and weak spots. Good thread runs smoothly and rarely breaks.

How do I know if my needle is damaged?

Run your fingernail down the needle. If you feel a burr or the tip catches, it is damaged. Also check if the needle is bent by rolling it on a flat surface.
