Fabric Not Feeding
Janome Sewing Machine
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
If your Janome is not feeding fabric, the first thing to check is the feed dog position — many Janome models have a drop-feed switch that lowers the feed dogs for free-motion sewing. Check the switch on the side or back of the machine and raise the feed dogs. Also ensure the presser foot pressure is set correctly for the fabric weight.
Affected Models
- Janome HD3000
- Janome MC9900
- Janome Magnolia 7318
- Janome 2212
- Most Janome models
Common Causes
- Feed dogs lowered (drop-feed switch engaged)
- Presser foot pressure too light for the fabric weight
- Feed dogs clogged with lint preventing movement
- Stitch length set to zero
- Free-motion foot attached instead of standard foot
How to Fix It
-
Check the drop-feed lever and raise the feed dogs.
On most Janome models the drop-feed switch is on the back or lower right side of the machine. Slide it to the up position so the feed dogs rise above the needle plate when sewing.
-
Set the stitch length to at least 2.0.
A stitch length of 0 means the machine forms stitches in place without moving the fabric. Set the stitch length dial to 2.0–2.5 for regular sewing.
-
Clean lint from the feed dog teeth.
Remove the needle plate and use a small brush to clear lint from between the feed dog teeth. Clogged teeth cannot grip the fabric effectively.
-
Check the presser foot pressure.
Some Janome models have an adjustable presser foot pressure dial at the top of the machine. Increase the pressure for thick fabrics. Too-light pressure lets fabric slide without gripping.
-
Confirm the presser foot is locked in place.
A presser foot not fully clicked onto the ankle cannot apply pressure to the fabric. Lift the presser foot lever, remove the foot, and reattach it until it clicks securely.
When to Call a Professional
If the feed dogs are raised, the stitch length is correct, and the machine still does not move fabric, the feed dog mechanism may need servicing. Contact a Janome dealer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the drop-feed switch on a Janome machine?
On most Janome models, the drop-feed or feed-dog lowering switch is located on the back-right side of the machine body or on the lower front panel. It is usually a small slide switch or button labeled with an icon of the feed dogs.
Why does my Janome feed unevenly, moving fabric in bursts?
Uneven feeding is usually caused by lint packed around the feed dog teeth preventing smooth motion. Remove the needle plate and clean the feed dogs thoroughly with a stiff brush.
