LCD Display Error / Blank Screen
Janome Sewing Machine
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A Janome LCD display showing a blank screen is usually in Sleep mode or has low contrast settings. Press any button or the power button to wake the display. An error code on the display indicates a specific machine fault — check the Janome manual for your model's error code list.
Affected Models
- Janome 3160QDC
- Janome Memory Craft 9450
- Janome Skyline S9
- Janome 6700P
- Janome MC9850
- All Janome computerised models with LCD display
Common Causes
- Display in Sleep mode — presses any button to wake
- Screen contrast set too low — display is active but invisible
- Software glitch requiring a power cycle
- Error code displayed indicating a specific machine fault (thread jam, motor fault)
- Physical display damage from a drop or impact
How to Fix It
-
Press a button to wake the display.
Janome computerised machines automatically dim or blank the display after a period of inactivity to protect the LCD. Press any stitch selection button, the needle up/down button, or the power button to wake the display. If the display lights up, the machine was in sleep mode — no fault exists.
-
Check the contrast setting.
On some Janome models, the display contrast can be adjusted in the settings menu. If the contrast is set very low, the screen appears blank even when active. Locate the Settings or Utility menu and look for a Display or Contrast option, then increase it.
-
Power cycle the machine.
Turn the Janome off at the main power switch. Wait 30 seconds (do not use the sleep button — fully power off). Turn the machine back on. A complete power cycle clears software states that can cause the display to freeze or show incorrect error codes.
-
Note and look up the error code.
If the display shows letters and numbers (E1, E2, E3, etc.), these are fault codes specific to your Janome model. Write down the exact code and look it up in the back of your Janome user manual — each model has its own code list. Common codes: E1 (upper thread), E2 (lower thread), E6 (motor).
-
Perform a factory reset.
On most Janome computerised models, hold the reverse button and the Start/Stop button simultaneously while turning on the power to perform a reset. Consult your specific model's manual for the exact reset procedure. A reset restores default settings and often clears persistent display errors caused by corrupted settings.
When to Call a Professional
If the display is physically cracked, lines are missing from characters, or specific segments are always off, the LCD panel itself has failed and needs replacement by a Janome technician.
