Motor Not Running

Janome Sewing Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

If your Janome motor hums but the machine does not move, there is likely a mechanical jam in the needle or bobbin area. Turn the handwheel by hand — if it resists, find and clear the obstruction before using the motor. If the motor is completely silent, check the foot control connection and the power switch.

Affected Models

  • Janome HD3000
  • Janome 2212
  • Janome Magnolia 7330
  • Janome Sewist 500
  • Most Janome models

Common Causes

  • Thread jam locking the needle mechanism
  • Bobbin area jammed with a broken needle fragment
  • Foot control cable disconnected or faulty
  • Power switch not fully turned on
  • Motor capacitor failed (older models)
  • Bobbin winder spindle engaged, preventing normal sewing

How to Fix It

  1. Check the bobbin winder spindle position.

If the bobbin winder spindle is pushed to the right (winding position), the motor disengages from the needle mechanism. Push it back to the left (sewing position).

  2. Turn the handwheel by hand to check for a jam.

Always turn toward you (counter-clockwise from the right). If the handwheel resists or will not move, there is a jam — find and clear it before using the motor.

  3. Clear any thread jam from the hook and bobbin area.

Remove the bobbin, bobbin case, and needle plate. Use tweezers to remove any thread wrapped around the hook basket. Check for broken needle fragments in the hook area.

  4. Check the foot control connection.

Ensure the foot control plug is fully inserted into the machine's foot control socket. Try a different foot control if one is available — foot control cable faults are common on older machines.

  5. Check the main power switch and ensure the machine is plugged in.

Some Janome models have a small power switch on the side in addition to the front switch. Confirm both switches are in the on position.

When to Call a Professional

If the handwheel turns freely by hand but the motor is completely silent when pressing the foot control, the motor, foot control, or main board may need professional repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Janome hum but not sew?

A humming motor that does not move the needle means the mechanism is jammed. Turn the handwheel by hand to locate the obstruction — most commonly a thread wrap around the hook or a broken needle fragment in the hook area.

Why does my Janome run slowly even at full foot control?

A slow-running Janome is usually caused by lint buildup in the motor or a partially seized mechanism needing lubrication. Bring the machine to a Janome dealer for a service — a full clean and oil is recommended every 1–2 years.
