Needle Breaking

Janome Sewing Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Needles breaking repeatedly means the needle is hitting something it should not. Wrong needle size, wrong presser foot for the stitch width, or a bent needle hitting the plate are common causes.

Affected Models

  • Janome MC9900
  • Janome MC6700P
  • Janome Skyline S5
  • Janome 4120QDC
  • Most Janome machines

Common Causes

  • Wrong presser foot for wide stitches — needle hits the foot
  • Needle bent from hitting a pin
  • Needle too thin for heavy fabric
  • Fabric being pulled instead of feeding naturally
  • Needle not fully inserted in the clamp
  • Needle plate damaged with a burr catching the needle

How to Fix It

  1. Use the correct presser foot for the stitch.

Wide stitches (zigzag, decorative) need a wide foot. A narrow foot with a wide stitch = needle strikes the foot and breaks.

  2. Use the correct needle size for the fabric.

Thin needle + heavy fabric = needle bends and breaks. Use 14/90 or 16/100 for denim, canvas, and multiple layers.

  3. Do NOT pull the fabric — let the feed dogs move it.

Pulling the fabric bends the needle sideways. Guide gently but let the machine feed.

  4. Remove pins before they reach the needle.

Sewing over pins is the fastest way to break a needle. Remove pins as the presser foot approaches.

  5. Check that the needle is pushed all the way up in the clamp.

A needle that is too low will hit the bobbin case or plate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can sewing over pins break needles?

Absolutely yes. Even hitting one pin can snap a needle and send fragments flying. Always remove pins before they reach the presser foot.

Should I use a thicker needle for everything?

No. A thick needle on thin fabric makes large holes and puckers the fabric. Match needle size to fabric weight.
