Presser Foot Error / Wrong Foot

Janome Sewing Machine

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The presser foot error means the machine detected the wrong presser foot for the selected stitch, or no foot is attached. Change to the correct foot for your stitch or reattach the current foot.

Affected Models

  • Janome MC9900
  • Janome MC6700P
  • Janome Skyline S5
  • Janome machines with foot detection

Common Causes

  • Wrong presser foot for the selected stitch pattern
  • Presser foot not fully clicked into place
  • Presser foot sensor dirty
  • Using a non-Janome presser foot without the detection feature

How to Fix It

  1. Check which foot the selected stitch requires.

The machine display usually shows which foot letter (A, B, C, etc.) is needed. Change to the correct foot.

  2. Remove and reattach the presser foot.

Press the foot release button, remove the foot, and snap it back on firmly.

  3. Clean the foot detection sensor.

Lint or thread on the sensor can prevent foot detection.

  4. If using a third-party foot: override the warning if your model allows it.

Some Janome models let you proceed despite the warning. Be careful that the foot is compatible with the stitch width to avoid needle strikes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I use the wrong presser foot?

The needle may hit the foot, breaking the needle and potentially damaging the machine. Wide stitches need wide feet. Zipper stitches need the zipper foot.

Are Janome presser feet interchangeable with other brands?

Many Janome machines use snap-on feet that are compatible with other brands. But machines with the foot detection sensor may not recognise third-party feet.
