Chime Not Ringing

Blink Smart Doorbell

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

If your Blink Doorbell does not ring, the cause depends on which chime you expect. For wired mechanical chimes, the doorbell must be wired correctly with a transformer of 16-24 V AC. For app notifications, check Blink app permissions and that the doorbell is online.

Affected Models

  • Blink Video Doorbell
  • Blink Video Doorbell (2nd Gen)

Common Causes

  • Doorbell battery-only mode (mechanical chime not wired)
  • Mechanical chime wired but transformer voltage out of spec (16-24V AC)
  • Blink Mini Chime accessory not paired
  • Notification permissions disabled in the Blink app
  • Doorbell offline (cannot send notifications)

How to Fix It

  1. Verify the doorbell is online.

Open the Blink app and check the doorbell status. If offline, no chime or notification will work. Resolve the offline issue first.

  2. Check chime mode in the app.

In the Blink app, go to the doorbell's settings. The chime mode setting controls whether the wired chime activates: select Mechanical Chime if wired, App Notifications Only if not.

  3. Check transformer voltage (wired chime).

If wired but the chime is silent, the transformer may be too weak or too strong. The Blink doorbell needs 16-24 V AC. Older homes may have 8-10 V AC transformers that are inadequate.

  4. Pair a Blink Mini chime accessory.

If you do not have a wired chime, you can pair a Blink Mini camera as a chime. The Mini will play a chime sound through its speaker when the doorbell is pressed. Set this up in Blink app > Mini settings > Use as Chime.

  5. Verify notification permissions.

Phone Settings > Apps > Blink > Notifications. Grant the Blink app notification permission. Without it, the doorbell will not send phone alerts even when working correctly.

When to Call a Professional

If you wired the doorbell to a transformer and the mechanical chime still does not ring, an electrician can verify the transformer voltage. Most modern doorbell transformers are compatible, but very old ones may not be.
