Chime Not Working
Google Nest Smart Doorbell
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Nest Doorbell chime problems are most commonly caused by the wrong chime type selected in the Google Home app, or a doorbell transformer that is too low-powered. Set the chime type to Mechanical in the app and verify the transformer is rated at least 16V AC at 10 VA.
Affected Models
- Google Nest Doorbell (Wired, 2nd gen)
- Google Nest Doorbell (Battery)
Common Causes
- Chime type set to None or Digital when a mechanical chime is installed
- Doorbell transformer underpowered — less than 16V AC or less than 10 VA
- Existing chime wiring not connected correctly at the Nest Doorbell
- Chime device not linked in Google Home for battery models
- Do Not Disturb silencing the chime
How to Fix It
-
Set the correct chime type in Google Home.
Open Google Home, tap the doorbell, then Settings > Doorbell Chime Type. Select Mechanical if you have an existing doorbell chime box. Select Digital or Electronic if you have a modern digital chime. If using only Google/Nest speakers as chimes, select None here and configure the speakers separately.
-
Check the transformer output.
The Nest Doorbell Wired requires a transformer that provides 16–24V AC at 10–40 VA. Many older homes have transformers rated at only 8V or 10V — these cannot support the Nest Doorbell and the chime simultaneously. A qualified electrician can replace the transformer in under an hour.
-
Verify the wiring connections.
At the doorbell mounting plate, confirm both wires are securely tightened to the terminals. Loose wires cause intermittent chime failures. Also check the wires at the chime box inside the home.
-
Link a Google or Nest speaker as a chime.
As an alternative to a mechanical chime, link a Google Home or Nest Hub speaker. In Google Home, go to the doorbell Settings > Doorbell Chime and add a speaker device. This is particularly useful for the battery model which has no wired chime connection.
-
Disable Do Not Disturb and retest.
In Google Home > Settings > Do Not Disturb, confirm it is off. Press the doorbell button and listen for the chime — it should sound within 2 seconds.
